◄ What To Read
Happy New Year’s everyone. It’s 2015 now and it’s time to celebrate. In Japan, many celebrate the new year’s by visiting Shinto Shrines and praying wishes for a better year. During this time as well many would draw fortunes to see how much luck they will have in the new year. So let me introduce you some mangas that with brighten up the new year for you.
Name: Lucky Star
Status: Ongoing - 10 volumes so far
Genre: comedy, slice of life, shounen
Age rating: Teens (13+)
Summary: Lucky Star’s story portrays the lives of four Japanese girls attending a Japanese high school. The main character is Konata Izumi, a lazy girl who constantly blows off her schoolwork and homework, and instead uses most of her time to watch anime, play video games, and read manga. Although she is lazy, she has also proven to be very intelligent and athletic. In addition there are four other main characters which are Kagami Hiiragi, Tsukasa Hiiragi, and Miyuki Takara and as the story progresses them moving from first year of high school to second and third years.
Notes: Mention of perverted thoughts and the fact that one of the main girl characters along with her dad have this weird relationship where they play these dating sims games. Those of you who can’t handle awkward perverted moments should not read this. It has that kind of humor.
Rating: I would have to say this manga is like Azumanga Daioh for me. It’s a hilarious read that is formatted in manga strip reading style. The reader doesn’t have to fully understand or know backstory because it’s not always needed; however, it is helpful. This manga though compared to Azumanga Daioh can be at times in my opinion a little more perverted. This reading is more chibi and discusses more manga references due to the main character. So those who like to read something funny and directed more towards shounen or guy audience. Then this is the kind of manga you should read.
Anime Adaption: At the end of the Lucky Star episodes there would be this mini like TV show part and that additional part just makes it more funny and interesting. The anime is just as funny as the manga. The anime starts with them in their second years.
Live Action Drama Adaption: None
Name: Yotsuba&!
Status: Ongoing - 12 volumes so far
Genre: Comedy, slice of life
Age rating: All ages
Summary: The main character is Yotsuba Koiwai (hence the name for the manga) and she is a five-year old adopted girl who is energetic, cheerful, curious, odd, and quirky. She is ignorant to many aspects of life in which children her age should know, but she learns more about throughout the story. Her naivete is the center of the humor for this story. Featured in this story is her adoptive father, Koiwai, and their new neighbors, Ayase family which consists of three daughters (from oldest to youngest) Asagi, Fuuka, and Ena. In addition, featuring Koiwai’s friends such as an impressively tall man nicknamed Jumbo. This story focuses on the daily life of Yotsuba.
Notes: None
Rating: I really love this manga because Yotsuba is so cute and funny. Her cuteness and naivety cheers me up when I read this manga. Even though yes this an all age manga, I find this manga to be super funny and cute just because it’s so childish. This is a manga to be read by those who are amused when seeing children growing up and learning. There is no continuous plot to this so reading the manga is not necessary but highly recommended because of the inside jokes and the reasons for Yotsuba’s reactions to certain things. In this manga it features their daily lives through the seasons and the smallest things done, so appreciating the small aspects of our lives in which we might not find fascinating but to Yotsuba it’s amazing. This is manga that is to be read for fun and because it’s cute.
Anime Adaption: Sadly none, I wish there was one.
Live Action Drama Adaption: None
Sorry I started the new year with such short reviews. I finding it busier for me at the moment and as well harder to find ways to describe the mangas. I shall try harder though for the readers. Remember in the last issue how I mentioned that I have a language section. Well the first issue is posted up and you should read it. The first lesson in language is about the New Year. I hope everyone has a wonderful start to their new year.
