Chapter One

Catherine's POV

I stormed into the girls' dorm of the group home i was currently living in, with Mary my case worker, on my tail.

"Don't walk away from me Catherine," she yelled at my back. While Tasha - my best friend - sat up. She was sitting on her bed, reading a book like she always does.

"I'm not going to this foster home," I yelled at her.

"Yes you are!" she yelled back, "you want to know why? Because you have no choice. Now pack up and be ready be tomorrow morning. Your flight is at Noon and you have to be there by ten." With that she stormed out of my room.

I turned to Tasha, she was brought here when she was six and I was five: we've been best friends ever since. She has brown curly hair and brown eyes. She's super sweet... unless you piss her off. Trust me you dont want to piss her off. She got up and walked over to me as I slammed my suitcase on my bed.

"You've been placed in a home?" She asked, sitting down on my bunk.

"It would seem so," I said extremely annoyed.

"It's not that bad, we've been placed in homes before," she said sadly.

"It wouldn't be so bad, but it's in another country... in the middle of nowhere," I said sitting down.

She stood up, "WHAT!!" she yelled

"Yeah. My new home is in the small town of Woodsberry,Nova Scotia" I said defeated.

"That's too far away. They can't do this!" she said, still yelling.

"That's what I said"

"We've been separated before, but never that far..."

I just nodded as i felt a tear slip down my face. Tasha walked over to me, sat beside me and wiped the tear away.

"If you cry, your mascara and eyeliner will go everywhere. Then I'll have to call you raccoon eyes," she said trying to lighten the mood.  I just nodded.

The rest of the girls in the home walked in and I looked at the time... it seems as it is bed time. I grabbed my PJ's and bathroom stuff, like everyone else then went to the bathroom. I put on my black PJ pants with a black tank-top and went to take off my make up. I pulled my jet black straight hair into a ponytail, so it was off my face. My ponytail reached to about mid-back. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I have icy blue eyes, a button nose, and pink lips. Which i usually cover in bright red or black lipstick. I guess you'd call me Goth, but I'm actually more Punk.

I walked back into the room then finished putting the rest of my stuff into my suitcase. I don't have a lot, just some clothes, a stuff animal - that i've had since i was a baby - and a picture of me and my older brother. I felt tears sting my eyes when I looked at his picture. He probably doesn't even remember me... we were split up a long time ago. I put the picture in my suitcase, closed it, and slid it under my bed. I then climed into my bed and fell asleep.

"Wake up," I heard someone yell at me. "Catherine, wake up!"

I slowly opened my eyes to see Tasha waking me. I sat up and looked at the time: 9:30am.

"We all know how long you take to get ready in the morning. You have thirty minutes get moving!" she hollered at me.

I headed to the bathroom, where I had a fast shower and pulled on some ripped skinny jeans with a Sons of Anarchy pink and black top. I pulled on my black combat boots and walked to the mirror. I swept on some black eyeliner, mascara, and my favorite colour of red lipstick before heading back to the room. I gathered my stuff and said goodbye to all my friends.

When I walked into the grey brick room that has rows and rows of bunk beds with green sheets and blankets it always made me think of a boot camp room like you'd see on tv. when i looked up t saw every friend well the ones that are not in foster homes standing together holding a banner that said goodbye Cat. They all walked over to me and hugged me goodbye before leving the room. Tasha walked over to me and pulled me into a hug "you better call and text me every day" she said "I will" "Catrherine are you ready to go" My Case worker said.

Tasha hugged me one more time and I grabbed my stuff, turning to leave. Tasha and I have this rule about saying goodbye: we never say the word goodbye. We don't say it because if we do, we feel like we will never see each other again. We will see each other again.. I hope. I looked at the boring brown brick building that has been my home since I was three-years-old, turned to the car and got in.

We drove off toward the airport. It took about 15 minutes, in no time I was standing in the security line. Getting all my stuff checked, with my case worker right behind me. Yeah... she has to make sure I get on the plane, before her job with me is done. We sat down with about five minutes to  go until I board the plane.

"Can we have all the children and miners line up to board, please," the flight attentant said on the intercom.

I stood up, after all i am a miner. Two years, I'll be 18 and out of the system, finally on my own. I turned to my case worker and looked into her brown eyes. This probably won't be the last time I see her, since I tend to get into troublle. I still have her brown short hair and every wrinkle that had taken over most of her face memorized - most likely because of me. This woman has been like a mother to me and I'll never forget that.

"Goodbye," we both said. Then I got onto my flight.
