Prologue

Maine, 1966

"I was on the train to Maine. It became a series of stops. And, as I read a novel, the train master's silky voice drifted from the darkness...

"...'Collingsport is 3 miles'...And I shivered with fright...since I was now seeing the Maine misty fog...envelop me in my body".

Dark shadows seemed to wash away my other fears...

...Yet, in my head, that was the problem; that was the symptom, of the grand fate of things. In my hand held a letter.

It read:

"TO MISS VICTORIA WINTERS,

I AM HONORED TO HAVE YOU COME TO COLLINGSPORT, MAINE, BECAUSE IT IS MY JOB, AS THE HEAD OF THE FAMILY, TO DESCRIBE TO YOU, AS YOU'RE VERY AWARE, OF THE WAYS OF THE HOUSE...

..."MORE OF THE REASONINGS OF YOUR EMPLOYMENT SHALL BE ADDRESSED ONCE YOU ARRIVAL IS SEEN TO BY OTHERS. PLEASE DON'T BOTHER READING THE LETTER AGAIN...UNLESS YOU KNOW MY FAMILY WELL...".

SIGNED,

ELIZABETH COLLINS STODDARD,

MAINE, 6/6/1966.
