I held a candle in my right hand.

To my surprise, Elizabeth announced once more to let me know who her family was:

"I, as you know, am at a pains to tell all of you about the news of a new girl here. This young woman is Victoria Winters. I knew her parents in New York back in nineteen sixty-two. Because of the assassination of President Kennedy in nineteen sixty-three, the time wasn't right to have her working for us. There's no time in American history to force anyone to come here, unless the villagers continue working afterwards. And, now, I'll continue.

..."Carolyn Stoddard is my eldest daughter; Roger Collins is my cousin; Maggie Evans, Roger's wife, is most anxious to deal with you; and David Collins, their ten year old son. Of course, I do prattle on a bit too much".

I heard Carolyn Stoddard speak in a soft voice.

"Well, I won't bother you, Victoria...", Carolyn said, "...I want to go to the Blue Whale, if there's no objections, Mother".

Her long, black hair glowed in the dark.

She wore a black dress.

"I can't stop you, Carolyn. But you can't be dressed so, like them". She smiled. Carolyn shook her head.

"But I want to be like them, Mother. I need to go to to the dances; I need to go on dates. And Joe Haskell is there...".

"Joe, he's rather angry...".

"Joe feels he needs to stop me getting into trouble...".

"Carolyn, we'll discuss this later".

"Fine, but I heard, oh, no matter".

She sipped her tea, and sat next to me.

I hugged her like a distant relative, and she felt that I was now part of the family.

"Frankly, I hate to bother all of you. My time in the ports have deserved a note of caution. I shan't bother in my time in Collinsport. That Maine is a place of change. See that picture on the wall. Barnabas's dark shadow sears the faces of all who live here. And he left us. Maybe Elizabeth can tell us where he's buried", Roger Stoddard said.

"Tell you, Roger. He is buried in the dark chambers in a coffin".

She stumbled over the words.

And Victoria shivered at the news, and finished drinking her tea.
