Section II

My life is fraught with dangers.

Mother knew that; Father knew that.

She was determined not to let me dwell on a fuse that was light by Burke Devlin in 1957. "I killed that man, Sam", he said.

"It wasn't supposed to be like that, Burke", I heard Father say. And, in the fishing ports, murder was taken seriously.

Because of the court trial, Burke knew how to be scarce; Burke knew how to get out of Collinsport; Burke and Sam Evans, (my Father), knew what happened.

And, when Mother passed away, what could I do? I was alone. And, when the fifteen thousand dollars came in Father's hands, he turned to the drink, while he gave me a framed painting of me to honor, and I had had to get the waitress job to pay my wages, or die like Mother did, almost a decade ago.

The Blue Whale was busy this morning.

I decided to fix some coffee.

As the jug boiled, Burke Devlin wasn't there.

It was Roger Collins.

And it was unhappy.

***

"Roger...".

"I don't suppose, as you do know, why I want to see you Maggie". He was dressed in a black suit, black tie, grey trousers, a black belt, black socks, and black shoes on his feet. His silvery blonde hair blew from the strange wind in the Inn's foyer, where he sat down.

"People do talk, Roger".

He moved towards her.

"I hate to bother you, Maggie. But Burke Devlin is a murderer. He killed people. He thinks Collinsport is haunted".

"Is it?".

"Well, unless you see dark shadows in every corner of the house. Unless you see things that aren't there; unless...".

"...Unless, as with Victoria Winters, you see what you want. May I have some coffee, and apple pie, Maggie?", he asked.

"Yes, on the house", Maggie answered.

Roger smiled.

***

"I was hearing about some fishing news".

"What kind of news? Did we haul in a huge amount of fish for the winter? Or spring? Or summer?", Roger said.

"Yes, and we heard another story".

"Tell me...".

"Apprently, Willie Loomis was seen near the Collins' coffins. Sam noticed him in his house. Willie is very mean, and dangerous".

"I heard he loved Barnabas Collins".

"Have you heard about your relative?", she asked.

"He's dead. Buried in the family graves".

"Is he?".

"Now, my dear girl, Barnabas Collins is the most dangerous man in Collinsport. And you shouldn't deal with rumors".

"Willie thinks he knows where he's buried".

"That drunken idiot! I suppose I have to see him".

"But not before you have your pie, and drink your coffee".

"I suppose so. I hate to ignore such wonderful service". And he looked at the coffee. Then he sipped it...just as the ringing of the bell sounded...and the customers walked through the front door...and made their way to their seats...and tables...

...Then ordered more coffee...and apple pie.

***

Willie arrived wearing a black coat.

"Maggie, I thought you'd be here".

"Willie, don't be...".

He shook his head.

"I know what I had had to do. And you're not going to tell me...Oh, Roger! I didn't know you'd come all this way".

"Willie, if you hang around my family home once more...I'll kill you". Willie backed off. He would deal with Roger Collins when he calmed down.

"I didn't mean to bother you, Roger. I was just trying to take care of the place. Look after the area around it, before it falls into ruin".

"You're not employed in my house". He stared at him.

***

Willie paid for his coffee.

"This town, Roger, has many secrets. More than you know. Or care to know. Because you're a Collins, doesn't justify violence".

Willie then opened the front door of the Blue Whale, and headed out into the gloomy road.
