It was my first day in Greenwood Public School.

I was very nervous and scared, and being an introvert and a shy person, didn't help much. And so, obviously, making friends was... difficult. God, I was just 11 years old, a 6th grade student.

But, by God's grace, there was this girl who used to live near my house, just a street away. And just before the school started, my parents went to meet her parents.

She was already studying in that school and my parents wanted to know about the school and teachers and the environment.

They met her and her parents. My mother told me they were nice people. And they still are.

Next day, I got ready and trust me when I say, I was a nervous wreck. I didn't know what to do, who to talk to, what was I supposed to do. I was freaking out.

I went to the school. Thankfully, fortunately, nobody was in the classroom. I was sitting on my seat and was looking forward to meet the girl because let's just say, she was the closest thing to familiarity, that day.

But unfortunately, she didn't come. Instead, another two girls showed up and they were already friends. I could tell because they were talking like long lost friends. They sat together and kept talking.

And guess what they were talking about... The girl I was waiting for - Vickie.

One of them was short with chubby childish features (We were children, stupid me). The other one had more mature features than the former.

The short one told Vickie was suffering from typhoid and won't be coming school the next day as well.

As much as I remember, which is not much, she probably went to meet her or called her to know whether she'd be coming to school today or not.
That's when she got to know about Vickie.

So, folks, that's how my hopes were crushed.

We introduced each other and I got to know their names - Alice and Pia.
Alice was the one who seemed to know all about Vickie.
Gradually, all the students started to come.

First period was assigned to our class coordinator, Ms. Brown.

She welcomed all the new comers and told all about the rules and regulations of the school, and what was expected from us.

Then came the introduction part. She told us to introduce ourselves, not just the new comers, but the old ones as well. Though she already knew them.

Every student was supposed to come forward and tell something new or anything interesting they learnt during the break. along with their introduction.
I told them a short story along with my intro.

Just like I mentioned earlier as well, I am an introvert, but back then, I was worse. I was so shy, I didn't talk much with anybody except Alice. We obviously talked about Vickie.

And that's when I got to know they both were best friends. Apparently, they were very close. They visited each other's house often and would hang out together all the time.

Their mothers were friends too, so that made everything easier. They would talk to each other on calls and stuff.
Overall, they were very frank with each other and very close. And since they became friends at such a young age, it was going to be a strong friendship.
I could feel it, then.

I was right.

Rest of the day was a blur, met all the other teachers and went on with all the introduction stuff.

The school was really good with very nice infrastructure, highly qualified teachers, and all the other requirements.

The principal and the director of the school, both of them were very... Intimidatingly nice. They were strict regarding the rules and discipline. Only the best result from everyone, was expected, be it a student Or a teacher.

But at the same time, they were gentle and polite.
I was very impressed with everything.

Among all the chatting, and gossips, I could tell the topic of Vickie was common. And I don't mean it in a bad way. It was like she was the popular girl. Everyone liked her. And missed her.

Back then, she was among the tall girls. I had an average height. In fact, now I'm counted among short girls. 5'2.5 height. We've the same height now.

So, the day ended well. Without any problem or embarrassment.
I wasn't so much comfortable but I could deal with all of it. The newness.
Maybe, it was the fact that I could actually talk to someone on day one, that I could take it.

It wasn't that bad and I was hoping and wishing it to get better and more comfortable with each passing day.

This was the start of a very important and very influential chapter of my life. This school, these people and Vickie...

Little did I know they were going to change my life so much.
