The T.V screen was fuzzing, indicating the tape had finished. I left it on though, my chin resting on my knees and my arms latching around my legs. The hairs on my arms were standing on end, and appeared to be trembling too despite there was no wind. I could've been mistaken for having a fit as I was shivering so much, my teeth chattering; it had suddenly gone very cold in the room.
A chainsaw. In his hands. Spinning and spinning like lightning.
Memories and vivid images flashed past my eyes. Why did he want me to watch this? To show me he had ultimate power over me? It was almost working.
The blade slowly resting on her delicate skin.
Almost.
The blade slowly resting on her delicate skin.
More pictures in my mind, refreshing my brain of what I'd just watched.
Blood, drenching the man and shooting the walls.
I flicked my head back in pure anger and opened my mouth wide.
Mutilated body.
I released an obstreperous scream, keeping my head back and mouth completely open.
Me.
Louder and louder. More and more. I screamed out my emotions, thinking it would help. When I stopped, I realised it didn't. What else can I do? I thought desperately to myself. What else?
I didn't know it till it started happening. First it was just a few whimpers, then it was a screwed up face, followed by one or two salty drops rolling down my cheeks. Eventually it turned into sobbing and screaming, punching the floor and ripping my hair. I ran over to my drawers and shoved everything off it. Glass from pictures smashed, delicate china ornaments broke into miniscule pieces and lampshades fell off lamps.
My room was mess.
"Emma?! Emma, get out of there!" Mum screamed suddenly from outside. She started banging on the door loudly and rattling the doorknob, almost breaking it.
Almost.
"No, go away!" I shouted and kicked the door to silence her.
"Please." Her voice broke at the end and she sniffed – my heart almost broke at how defeated she sounded, I hadn't heard her like this.
Almost.
"Let her in ... Let her see what I did to you." Leather Face's voice said aloud.
"Fuck off!" I yelled, but Mum assumed I directed it at her and thumped the door.
"EMMA! Don't you dare use that language!" She had so much venom in her voice I decided it'd be best to keep quiet, to avoid to be told off any more.
"Please come out, love. Please!" Her voice raised immensely at the end and the door began to cave in as she was probably throwing her weight at it. I had to think fast. I had to escape. I had to.
My head whipped around, looking at any escape. Looking for a way to just get out of this house, the house of nightmares. I couldn't stay there anymore, I couldn't. It would make me do things I'd regret — or worse — maybe I wouldn't even be in this world to regret them.
A lightbulb flashed above my head and I clicked my fingers smartly. I rushed over to the bedroom window and pulled it open. A gust of wind nearly knocked me over, but I dug my fingers into the wood of the window sill and managed to stay up right. The air was cool and crisp, nipping at my barely covered body. No time to get a jacket Emma, just go! Listening to my inner voice, I decided to just go with it. Do whatever came along, not plan everything out and then get my hopes crushed.
I flung my legs over the side of the window sill and clutched onto the sides. Strong wind pushed me backwards, but I was determined to go on. I pushed off with my hands and feet, leapt into the air and landed roughly on my bum on the grassy floor.
"EMMA!"
When I looked up, Mum was peering down on me with horror in her eyes. Tears were streaming down her cheeks and there were cuts on her arm where she'd pushed against the door. Whimpers filled my ears, most likely coming from her, but I shook my head.
"I'm sorry... I love you Mum."
And with that, I ran.
She called after me desperately — I couldn't bring myself to stop and turn back, back into the nightmares. I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
