It was just as hard leaving Kyra’s as it was leaving my own family behind. It feels as though a piece of your soul has been ripped out and crushed before your very eyes. And there isn’t a think you can do about it. But we had to leave. We just had to. I needed to prove I was innocent and find out who I was, because really in all honesty, I’m not sure anymore.
For a while, no one said anything. We all had the same thoughts running through our heads. What the heck were we doing? How in the world where we going get to get this done? And so many more thoughts like those.
Finally after who knows how long, Ace spoke, “Are we mad?”
“What!?” Robin and I called out in surprise.
“Are we mad? Here we are, three teens traveling across the Aphills because of what a fortune teller told us. Does that not sound mad to you?”
I thought for a moment. “Yes, mayhap it is a little mad.”
That’s when the laughter started. I began to laugh then Ace began to laugh and then finally Robin caught the giggles. It was the type of laughter that once you start you cannot stop. It just keeps going no matter what happens.
When our giggles finally ceased we noticed that we had walked farther than we thought we did. We were at the base of the mountains, literally. One more step and we would have been on the Aphills. We all stopped abruptly as if an invisible line prevented us from going any further.
“We’re here. Are we going to do this?” Robin asked.
“We have to. What else are we going to do?” Ace replied.
“So, who wants to take the first step?” Robin asked and we all stood there.
“I’ll do it,” I said taking the first step onto the mountain soil. For some reason, something changed. It felt different, like this rush of energy flowed through my body. I was probably just imagining things though.
“Come on!” I cried motioning for Ace and Robin to follow me. They did and I saw the same facial expression that I probably did when I first touched the rocky soil.
The two of them followed me up the rocky ground. The first steps were easy but soon the rocks began to pick on us. They jumped out of the ground and tried their hardest to make us trip and fall and come crashing down to the earth.
But we would not give up; nothing would stop us from being able to complete the task that had been set before us. No one said anything for the longest time, there was nothing to be said. We just walked.
It was hard, trudging up the mountain. It was not the same as walking normally. The ground rose vertically instead of being flat. Every now and then someone would fall. Then the others would help them to get up. We were a team and nothing was going to shake us.
Though we had not wanted to- we ended up doing it anyway- we looked back. Constantly we were turning around and staring down at the little village where Kyra, Rivera, Keaton, Fira, and their father and husband lived. But at the same time we saw our own village.
In Ace’s eyes she saw her hometown where she, Conrad and Robin grew up. Robin saw where he spent his boyhood days running up and down the streets, riding horses through the lawns.
I saw something different. I saw my village with Adela, Farah, Eleanor, Elira, and I spending our days at the lake where I first met Ace and Robin. I saw the little yard behind my house where Adela and I used to sit and talk. I saw myself running after Caspian when he managed to escape my clutches.
I did not want to look back. I did not want to relive those memories. I wanted to push on towards the future. But as focused as my mind was on the future my heart was on the past.
