You could literally say that a whole life went up in flames. A whole life, not in the sense of his birth until now, as one would think, but from John's retirement until now. His life only began with Helen, for she showed him the best of it and what it meant to live an ordinary life. One that could not be further removed from the one he had led until then.
You asked life for a price, it answered you, but you did not like the answer, John.
Fate wanted John back in his old life at all costs, otherwise Santino would never have sent him to collect the coin debt. Like I said, fate never treated him well and it would have been more of a tragedy. I guess the idea was that now that Helen was dead, John could come back. I don't want to know if her illness wasn't also part of the plan to get him back.
A chess player thinks not just one step ahead, but three, and three steps back. Lulling his opponent to safety, which would make him reckless and make a mistake. Now, many would say that John doesn't make mistakes because he is Baba Yaga, the bogeyman, but let's look back. It was reckless to refuse the coin, and to do so without listening to what was being asked.
Fate is such a chess player, and John's return had been planned by him for a long time, ever since he quit, so from the beginning. So who is to say that Helen was not just a means to an end?
