Raelynn's POV
Picture: Ray Prescott
We walk up to a big dark brown wooden door. The cozy middle-class house belonging to a close friend of aunt Cassie's. Amber. AKA, Ray's sister. AKA, the guy I don't want to see. AKA the guy i'm praying I won't run into. AKA, well, point made.
She's around the same age as my aunt Cassie. She has light brown hair with lighter highlights. She has milk chocolate brown eyes. I know because they're the same ones Ray has. She's got a cute button nose with medium sized lips. She's gorgeous. Every Prescott is.After Aunt Cassie made a small knock it didn't take long for Amber to answer.
"Hey guys, come on in." she greets with a full smile.
Entering her house, her eyes widen a little as she spots me.
"Raelynn! How have you been?" she asks engulfing me into a hug.
"Great. How have you been?"
"Great too." she says smiling.
"It's great to see you." she says. "Are you back for the summer?"
"Yeah I am actually. Just got here today."
"That's great. Well you guys are just in time for the food. We're out back" she says, leading us to the direction of her patio.
We step out and immediately see a small crowd of people. Most sitting down at a table while others, mostly men, are standing by the grill flipping hamburgers. Screaming kids are everywhere,
they look like a bunch of screaming ants. Wait, can ants even scream?"Guess he's not here." Alex says coming up to me and taking a place by my side.
"Who?"
"Don't act like you don't know who i'm talking about." she replies. Turning to me with a knowing look.
"I'm glad he didn't." I say.
"I knew you did. Just like I know you don't one hundred percent mean that."
I didn't even want to ask myself if she was right. It was a risk I wasn't willing to take. A bet I was definitely not going to make. So I make my way back to the safe zone and put my wallet back into my pocket. Safe and sound.
"Bold of you to assume that." I say.
"Even bolder of you to even try and deny it ." she replies.
If I didn't escape now Alex will not shut up. I can bet on that. And this was a conversation I did not want to continue.
"Well, i'm done with this conversation, i'm going to go eat." I say. Making my way towards the table holding the food mountain.
"Sure go eat your feelings away Rae!" Alex yells stirringly at my retreating figure.
I ignore her ridiculous comment and as always her dramatic outbursts and make my way through the food and it's satisfying aroma.
Everything she said was untrue. False. Wrong. Incorrect. And everything else that means inaccurate.
"Are you okay Raelynn?" I hear someone speak out.
I look down to the sound of the voice to find a concerned Hazel.
"Of course, why do you ask?"
"Because you're taking very angry bites out of your hamburger." she says looking down towards my hands.
I take a look down at my hands and find my fingers gripping a very squished up burger.
Damn it.
"I'm doing it again aren't I?" I say asking rhetorically.
"It's okay Rae. I won't tell anyone, pinky promise." she says holding out her pinky towards me.
There a sweet thing about kids and promises. Promises matter to them. Promises are everything. If Ray and I had kept most of our promises from last summer, things would be completely different. Things would be so much easier and sane. Yet here we are, two broke people with broken promises.
"Thanks kiddo." I say wrapping my pinkie around hers with a smile."Raelynn Mitchell." I hear a masculine voice call out.
I whip my head around and make contact with a 6 foot 1 light skinned with pearly whites.
"Levi Lancaster." I mimic.
"Well if it isn't the living legend." he says walking up to me.
Levi Lancaster, Ray's best friend since the first grade. They've grown up together, they're inseparable.
"Do you have to be such an ass kisser?" I ask
jokingly.
"I ask him that all the time, seems to me like he can never get enough of mine." says the gorgeous Malaysian boy with jet black hair.
Ty Montgomery. Other best friend of Ray. He actually met Ray and Levi in the second grade. Since then, they've been called the three musketeers, the trio, whatever has to do with the number three.
I literally believe they're the reason many say hot men travel in packs. I don't know if anyone actually believes that but when you see these three together you'll make it your religion.
"What can I say, you've got a nice ass." Levi answers.
"I feel like i'm interrupting something. You guys want me to come back later?" I say motioning to the two boys and their butt convo.
"Well you're welcome to join." Ty smirks.
"Tempting, but i'll take a hard pass." I joke.
Hearing Ty's laugh can make you fall in love with it instantly. Just because it's unique and peculiar in its own way. You'd spend all your energy trying all your famous jokes with him just to hear it one more time.
"Alright alright. But now that you are here, you know what this means right?" Levi speaks.
"oh god, skinny dipping?" I ask with a questionable knowing smile.
"Drunk skinny dipping, to be exact." Ty corrects.
"Did I hear skinny dipping?" Alex pops up with a root beer in hand.
"Drunk skinny dipping." Ty smirks.
"Well, why the hell not it wouldn't be summer without it." I say
Your summer at Windsor hasn't started unless you've gone skinny dipping. Everybody knows that. I, who just came here for the first time last summer knows that.
"Well I guess i'll join." Alex peeps taking a sip of her root beer.
"I guess we'll see you ladies tonight." Levi winks.
There was always something risky and reckless about swimming with no clothes on while being intoxicated. Everyone knew that. So why make it a tradition in such a small prudent town? My guess, a way to escape the suffocated and the high standard town itself, at least for one night. A night to be young, wild, and free. Something this small town never could be.I made my way to the bathroom. Locking the door behind me cause god forbid what happened to uncle Joey happens to me. Let's just say my 5 year old cousin left that night with the new talent of spotting uncle Joey's ass from a mile away.
As I wash my hands I hear ruffling and distant chattering in the living room.
I go to dry my hands but there's no towels or napkins. I open the cabinet door and instead of finding clean towels, I come face to face with nostalgia. I grab the now clean ruby red two piece swimsuit and feel the memory come to life.~~
Last Summer:
"I'm so going to make you pay for this Prescott." I say as we enter the bathroom. Mud dripping from my hair to my feet.
"And what exactly is my kitten gonna do?" Ray says closing the bathroom door behind us. His swim trunks leaving droppings of mud all thought out the bathroom floor.
He knew I hated it when he called me that. I knew he was doing it to laugh at me.
"I'll go to hell for even thinking it." I reply.
"But kittens don't go to hell." he answers smirking proudly.
~~The hard knock on the door awoke me from my trip down memory lane. I opened the door to meet Amber's shy smile.
"Sorry hun thought you might need this." she states handing me a baby blue hand towel.
"oh yeah thanks." I say grabbing it.
"Oh you're welcome to take it, you forgot it here last summer and it's stayed in that cabinet ever since." she says eying my left hand.
I look down at my left hand holding my ruby red swimsuit I had found.
"Oh great, thanks for holding it for me." I say with a grin.
"Of course, no problem. I'll let you finish up now." she says giving me a smile before turning her back and walking back into the leaving room.It was tremendously silent when I stepped out of the bathroom. And when I look up to meet those familiar milk chocolate brown eyes I spent all summer looking into, I realized why.
"Ray." I breathed out. His name coming out more of a whisper.
And that's when it happens. My heart goes haywire and if there was a doctor here to check it they'd be insanely worried. All memories start popping in my head like an open photo album. Everything I didn't want to feel is whirling through me like a tornado. I even felt jittery, for numerous reasons.
I don't know how long we just spend staring at each other but this is definitely what I wanted to avoid.
"Hey babe, did you lock the car?" a girl says walking in. She's got tan skin. Long dark brown hair with matching eyes. Tall. Small. Insanely pretty.
"uh yeah I did." answers Ray, never taking his eyes off me once.
He doesn't turn away until the girl is right next to him staring up at him. She's stares up as if waiting for him to do something.
"Right um this is Claire, she's um, she's-" Ray begins but can't seem to concentrate enough to finish.
"girlfriend" Claire finishes off for him.
"It's nice to meet you guys." she says with a small smile.
And in those few seconds the jittery feeling turned into a pang in the stomach.
girlfriend.•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
