Jo
I've always known Hero and his family to be the conservative bunch. Well, Hero... not anymore. So when Mercy shows me my room that is at the very end of the hall after Hero and I say our goodnights by his bedroom's door at the other end of the hall, I am no longer too surprised.
I roam my eyes around the room as she stands by the door. It's a fairly good-sized room, larger than my room back in LA even. It's quite generic like how a guest room usually looks like-cream-colored walls, double size bed with white pillows and sheets, dark wood furnitures and an en suite. Despite looking more like a hotel room, it smells nothing like one. The room smells like lavender fields, it's so lovely.
"I already put some spare clothes in the closet for you, Jo. Clothes I haven't worn yet," Mercy says as she walks into the room and sits on top of the bed.
I sit next to her and smile softly. "Thank you, Mercy."
A comfortable silence falls between us before she breaks the quiet. "I'm happy for you and my brother, Jo. I'm glad mum and dad finally gave in and made an effort to reach out to the two of you."
"I am, too," I smile.
"You know... I've always wanted a sister. It's different growing up with two brothers. I didn't have someone to help me dress up or go shopping or... talk about boys," she mumbles shyly, her cheeks turning red at the last part and I fight myself from grinning as the image of Mercy and Felix at the bar crosses my mind.
"I have an older sister. We were close once but eventually drifted apart when we entered into our teens because... you know," I shrug and she nods in understanding before I continue. "But we've recently reconnected and I agree with you. There's nothing like a sister." After a few seconds of silence, I get an idea and practically jump off the bed. "Show me your room. Do you have some face masks and nail polishes?"
"Yeah, why?" she answers quizzically.
"I'm not that sleepy anymore. Come on," I pull her up to her feet and drag her out the room. Moments later, we are giggling while we do each other's nails. I choose black and silver polishes for Mercy and she coats my nails with mint and baby pink. We talk about fashion and movies and Netflix shows we are currently obsessing. We laugh about how she beat the shit out of Sophia even though her face turns beet red from reminiscing how wild she got that night. I tell her how badass she was for sticking up for me and Hero both from his ex and their mum and she gushes like it was nothing though I can see her eyes sparkling with happiness and satisfaction. Once our nails dry, we put on Korean face masks as we lay down on her bed. I have to say, I'm having the best time with Mercy right now.
"Jo?" Mercy whispers as we both stare up at the ceiling, letting the mask do wonders to our skin.
"Hmm?"
"How did you know?"
"Know what?" I ask.
"That you love Hero," she clarifies.
Oh, so we're having this talk. Cool, I smile to myself.
I think about her question and how I'm going to answer it, choosing my words carefully since she still is Hero's younger sister. "Well... Hero and I didn't really start out in the most conventional way normal couples do. It was just fun from the very start. We just did what felt right when we were together which was almost every waking hour of our days in Atlanta. Your brother's just too good and too sweet and I didn't really have much of a choice, I knew I was a goner for him as the days passed. He was always there even in times that I didn't know I needed him, he was there." The memory of Hero catching me when I passed out by the elevator flashes through my mind and I smile. "Though what your brother saw in me, I still can't figure out up to this day. I was crazy, Mercy. Absolutely fucking mental. But he was still there no matter what and that's the kind of guy you can easily fall in love with. He made it so easy for me even if I made it so hard for him." My heart flutters as I finish my speech. It's always weird talking about mine and Hero's relationship with another person.
