Seven Days Left

"I don't think we're the cutest couple around anymore," Jake stated, a slight frown set on his face.
I made a clicking sound with my tongue as I looked at the couple in front of us. "Unfortunately, I think you may be right, babe."
Danielle and Mason were the new, cute couple. They were always making jokes and teasing each other. In my opinion, they were adorable.
I was afraid that Jake and I were no longer the "cute couple." No, not anymore. The trophy now belonged to Danielle and Mason. They were incredibly cute together, and I couldn't be happier for either of them.
Though, it was still a little hard to believe that they were together. Danielle didn't really do "relationships." She never really had, truthfully. Yeah, she's had boyfriends—or temporaries, as she usually put it—but she had never been in a real, genuine relationship. I always told her that she loved to see people in love, rather than actually being in love.
In all honesty, it was actually kind of weird to see her with someone, for me at least. The last time she was "with" a guy was at the beginning of last school year, and the lucky guy's name was Sabastian James or Bash, which he preferred to be called. He was a pretty cool guy, a looker too, but I never really considered him to be boyfriend material. He was one of Christian's close friends, so I guess you could say that his personality wasn't exactly what you would look for in an ideal boyfriend—unless you were into those bad-boy types. Bash was one of the big, hotshot football players in our school. He was also an arrogant player—a heartbreaker.
So was I happy for my best friend? Of course; she'd been crushing on Mason since we first got to California. But would it take a little getting used to? Oh, definitely. Mason was a nice guy, and he was different from all the other guys that Danielle had dated before. It was refreshing.
We had been lounging in the Lazy River for the past fifteen minutes, and the four of us were sharing two of the tubes made for couples. Mason and Danielle were about ten feet ahead of us, goofing around and making jokes every couple of seconds.
"We're cute in our own type of way," Jake said, giving my hand that was interlocked with his a little squeeze. "The two of us have something they don't." His eyes were serious and a certain passion was held in them. I could tell his words had a double meaning to them, and to say the least, they took my breath away. My cheeks began to heat up.
"A-And what would that be?" I mused, trying to recover. Even now, he could still take my breath away with just the look in his eyes. Maybe it's because I'm in love with him. A ghost of a smile hinted on his lips, as if he was sharing a little secret with himself. "Tell me! What is it?"
"I think you know," he replied, the smile still playing on his face.
Did I know? Probably not, because I honestly didn't know what he was talking about. I gave him a weird look. "Care to explain?"
"Oh, you'll figure out what I mean eventually. Trust me."
"Secretive now, are we?"
"Secretive? Never!" He smirked, and I rolled my eyes, laughing with him.
In that moment, it really—like really—dawned on me how lucky I truly was. And as I looked at this beautiful, hilarious, talented, amazing—the list could go on, to be honest—man next to me, I noticed how hard I actually fell for him. My feelings towards him were far greater than Danielle's feelings towards food, and that was saying something.
