It was raining hard. And he hated it. He's always hated the rain for as long as he could remember.
Shivering, the seventeen year old boy known as Naruto stood beneath the awning of the small pawnshop located in the downtown area of Konohatropolis. He hated the city with a passion but knew deep down inside he'll never be able to leave it. This was the only place where he could make a living doing the only thing he knew how.
He fingered with the money he had, silently adding it to the small amount he had stashed away. Math seemed to be the only school subject he was good at and found use for. He could multiply, divide, subtract, add, faster then you could type on the calculator. Well, his schooling was limited.
"Eighteen Yen" he muttered disgustedly, before shoving the money in his front pocket. He leaned there eyeing the passing civilians with hawk like eyes.
He had hair the colour of sunshine, blue eyes that put the sky to shame, tanned skin and whisker like scars on his cheeks. Three for each. He wore a black and orange jacket, and black pants, as well as an orange beanie. With that much orange he wore you would think he is easy to spot. But no, because the blond was cunning, and slippery like a fox. Hide and seek has always been his most beloved and favoured game. He is also a fast runner, making him even more difficult to catch, boosted with high stamina and endurance.
"Eighteen Yen for one lousy ring. I thought the piece of shit would cost atleast fifty" sighing he realized that even with the thirteen he had in his pocket it won't be enough. But then again, he never had enough. Such was the way things went when you lived in her part of the city.
He stepped out from his shelter and walked to the other side, looking up he saw the dark torrents of water falling relentlessly from the night sky. Soaking him mercilessly to the bone. His thin tattered clothes did nothing to keep the moisture out and the cool night air considerably chillier because of the rain, soon causes his shivering to increase drastically.
With water running down his hair, and down his face, he coughed and crossed his arms, his body shivering and teeth clattering. He is actually surprised he hasn't lost consciousness yet and passed out on the street.
He doubted anybody would care. Nobody ever does. Not for a nobody like him. He imagines his corpse, being stepped on or just passed by without even being spared a glance, as if he was nothing. No wait, he is nothing. He has always been nothing. That is never going to change.
Falling into the small crowd that had formed he busily worked his way through them to start on his walk home, picking a few pockets as he went. He smiled in dark humour. Those fools, to invested in their warm and comfortable lives, talking about pointless topics over the phone to even notice his slippery hands reaching into their pockets. Idiots, don't they ever learn?
A guy had to get by somehow, he had always reasoned. There wasn't really much choice for someone like him, a street rat, as he had been branded by people thousands of times. It doesn't affect him anymore, he has long since learned to numb himself. Words are empty, they can't hurt you. Only pathetic weaklings with easy lives get hurt over words, because they have a family and friends to go to for comfort and to help them.
He reached into his last pocket of the evening and pulled out the black leather wallet. Slipping it into his own pocket with the other items he had stolen before someone noticed him holding it. The last thing he needs was a rain soaked chase through the streets. He isn't being cocky, but he has no doubt he could lose any pursuers, but he is far too tired to go through the effort.
He felt someone watching him, he quickly looked up to see a pair of furious eyes glaring at him as the owner of the wallet reached into his back pocket.
"Fuck" he cussed before sprinting at top speed. "Get back here!" the man called following after him in pursuit.
Naruto did not dare to spare a quick glance over his shoulder to see if the man was gaining on him or not. He had to get away.
The traffick light turned red and let the people cross to the other side of the road, Naruto slowed down his pace to a light jog, blending in with the crowd again.
He took a very quick glance behind him to see if the same man was still chasing him. He gave a small sigh of relief to find no one.
As soon as he turned to move forward however, his blue eyes made contact with a pair of mist matched ones. One was stormy grey, while the other was crimson colored.
And then it happened. In that one moment that their eyes met, it seemed that the whole world faded into nothing. Everything became white, Naruto couldn't feel the cold anymore, just warmth. He also saw red. A red string. His eyes had traveled down to their hands as he and the man passed each other to see a red string on his and the man's little fingers connecting them.
They still remained eye contact, even when the world returned, even when he felt the cold again, even when the rain poured down harder then before. As they kept drifting further and further apart, the red string became fainter and fainter, almost impossible to see. But Naruto, could feel that it was still there. Connecting him, and the stranger.
But he had to go. Naruto closed his eyes and made a run for it, and as soon as the moment started, it ended just as quickly.
