Venus sat on the porch of her house, the sun was high up in the sky. It was a hot August day and there seemed to be no soul out in the neighborhood. The breeze was hot and humid, it was quiet for the most part except for the occasional sprinklers in the yards going off. She was going to miss this calmness, the comfort of home and silence of a lonely town.

She had been accepted to the Fashion Institute of Technology, meaning she would be moving to New York. She was excited for the new chapter in life, the past few months of her life had been different yet better. Since her last breakdown everything seemed to take a turn for the better, oddly she didn't feel as taunted by her dreams as they soon started to comfort her, they had a new feel to them. They were happy. She sometimes even remembered them, like in one dream she sat by a lake and watched the sunset with someone. It was her favorite dream although she can't remember the person. Every night she felt at ease with herself unlike before.

Today marked the last day in Houma, Louisiana meaning no longer the quietness of an urban city. Mr. and Mrs. Fell were going to accommodate Venus for her first week in New York and help her settle in her dorm. Everything was packed for their flight tomorrow. Venus didn't feel the need to take anything unnecessary, so for the most part it was her clothes and art supplies.

Sighing Venus got up from the porch and headed inside, her mom was in her office and her dad out fishing with his friends. Today felt too odd and quiet, maybe because it was her last day, that's why, she thought. With heavy and lazy steps she went up the stairs to her room, which was mostly the same except for a few pictures and drawings were missing from her walls that she decided to pack for New York. Taking the book she had started reading last night but didn't get past the first few pages from her bed to read outside, just as she turned around the usual smell of burnt wood was ever present again in her room. She couldn't ever explain its orgain, it just seemed to linger around her, especially in her room and whenever she went to sleep. She didn't hate it, she actually liked it. It was a calming scent and always made her feel at home. She would miss it she thought, she would miss the comfort it brought her every night going to bed and how she couldn't get it out of her head, as if she was addicted to it.

She spent the rest of the day reading in the lawn, going in when her dad got back with nothing caught, which gave the little family a good laugh at dinner. Soon the day had come to an end it was time for them to go to bed. Venus that night lay awake in her bed waiting for the sun to rise, she was excited yet worried. What if New York wasn't what she dreamed of? What if she couldn't handle the hacktik life of the big city? What if she couldn't live by herself? Her mind was filled with what ifs. Turning in her bed for the hundred time, she sighed. It didn't matter what awaited her, she thought, she had chosen this path and she would have to go through it. At the end she actually managed to get a few hours of sleep wrapped around in her sheets with the burnt wood smell.

When they arrived in New York the next morning after their three hour flight, it felt weird yet Venus liked the feeling of being insignificant compared to the big city. Maybe it was her small town thinking or that she just liked to be hidden in the masses. The week went relatively fast, fixing up the dorm only took two day and the rest of the week she spent sightseeing with her parents. Her parents had been staying at a hotel near the dorms. She liked her dorm although it was tiny compared to her room back home, but she was happy she didn't have to share it. The only thing that bothered her was the community showers and kitchen but other then that she was thrilled to be there.

The week soon came to an end. Her hugs with her parents lasted longer than usual, "You better call us at least once a week, okay? I'll fly out if I don't hear from you." Mrs. Fell said, hugging her daughter tightly.

"Then I should probably not call." Venus said laughing with teary eyes and before she knew it, it was time for them to catch their flight back to Louisiana.
