"Why are we in here?" Eleanor heard her companion's little voice echo through the vent, breaking the silence.
"Daddy doesn't want us to get hurt."
"But where are we going?"
"We're going to meet him on the other side."
Eleanor continued crawling through the warm vents, trying to find the exit where Delta would be waiting for them. Estrella was right behind her, taking great care in following her so she doesn't get lost.
"I think this is it." Eleanor stopped, detecting the distinctive scent not to far from this area. The scent she loved that always reminded her of him.
"Do you see him?" Estrella whispered, trying to get a peak of the outside. Eleanor shook her head, looking back towards the younger girl.
"No, but I can smell him. He should be here any minute."
They both quickly grew content in sitting in the vent, waiting in comfortable silence. Faint echoes of people were heard in the distance, along with some lovely sounding music. It was hard to tell if those who played it were good or bad.
"Eleanor?"
"Yes?"
"Do you have a Mommy?"
"What is that?"
"It's... um, I don't know."
"I don't think I have.... a Mommy."
"I thought all little girls do."
"All little girls have Daddies."
"Then all little boys have Mommies?"
"I think so."
"Then why don't little boys have Daddies too?"
"Maybe because they don't like Daddies like we do."
"Then boys are dumb."
BANG! BANG! The knocks came slow but hard.
"That's Daddy!" Estrella said cheerfully, making Eleanor giggle as she crawled towards the opening, more than happy to see the large figure on the other side.
Eleanor peeked her head out, smiling excitedly at the bright yellow lights that she adored so much seeing every day. She reached over to her side, untucking the plush surprise she had snugly kept under her arm.
"Look Daddy, it's you!" She displayed the large plush to her Father, who stared at it in silence. He brought his hands over to her, gently grabbing her by the waist to lower her down towards the ground.
"Do you like it?" Estrella peeked her head out, glancing over at the doll Eleanor made in her hands. "I helped make the head. I tried so hard to make it look just like you."
Delta said nothing, as usual. He brought his hands to her, the girl raising her arms to allow him to pick her up, raising her out of the hidey hole to place her on the ground.
"Is it my turn to smell ADAM? I can already smell it."
Eleanor started walking ahead, Estrella following in tow with the large rumbling footsteps of Delta right behind them.
The three of them came down some small stairs and turned left down a short hallway. Eleanor was more than glad to continue taking the lead. She stopped at the top of the stairs, finding an Angel sprawled along the floor, which was truly just a man in a clean tuxedo with a visible gunshot wound to the chest. Probably a debt collector coming to collect his cut, or a fight gone wrong.
