Best Mistake You Ever Could've Made

Stiles sighs as he turns the key in the lock of his and his boyfriend's apartment. They've been together for a year and a half now, and they finally moved in together about 3 months ago. They met when they were just 20, being in the same college program and partners for many projects. They were friends for 2 years before they started dating, and they celebrated their graduation by moving in with one another.
Stiles wasn't sure if he could see them getting married, but he did love him, that was for sure.
Once the door unlocks, Stiles doesn't bother to kick off his shoes before heading to the kitchen and dropping the takeout he brought home on the table. That's odd, there's a two wine glasses in the sink, Travis doesn't even like wine.
Stiles' stomach sinks as he pieces everything together, and he slowly makes his way back to the bedroom, where he prepares himself for what he's going to see.
He slowly opens the door and finds Travis, his 'loving' boyfriend, in bed with a blonde woman, clearly both naked, and clearly in the middle of something.
Stiles sighs to himself before heading over to their closet, not saying another word, and pulling out Travis' suitcase. He heads over to the dresser they share and starts pulling out all of Travis' clothes, piling them into the suitcase; that's when the two notice they've been caught.
"Stiles! What are you doing home?" Travis panics and Stiles sighs and shakes his head.
"Packing up my lying, cheating, son of a bitch ex-boyfriend's stuff, and kicking him out of my apartment. You have five minutes to get your shit and leave before I call the cops and have you thrown out! And may I remind you, my father is the sheriff, so he will happily help you and your whore of a friend out of my house and into the back of the squad car, where he will promptly beat your ass. So I suggest you get your ass out of our bed, get dressed, and get the fuck out of my life!" Stiles screams at him and Travis and the girl scramble to collect their clothes.
"Stiles! Please! Can't we talk about this?! You're my whole world baby!" Travis tries to plead and Stiles scoffs at him.
"I'm sure I am. That's why you felt the need to bring home some slut to our home. No, we can't talk about this. I want you out. Grab what you need and never come back here. Send your mom to pick up the rest, Jen will be so disappointed in you. She gave me permission to marry you by the way, just after the second date. She's such a good mom, I wonder what she'll think when I call her and tell her what happened." Stiles threatens and Travis scrambles to collect the rest of the things he needs.
Stiles hauls the suitcase and the remaining of Travis' clothes from the closet to the front door, throwing them down the front steps and into the pouring rain.
"Stiles please! Don't make me leave! I love you!" Travis pleads and Stiles rolls his eyes.
"Get out. And for your own safety, stay away from me." Stiles glares and slams the door in his face, locking it before breaking down into tears.
He grabs a few boxes they have in the house and starts collecting Travis' stuff, piling it by the front door.
Afterwards, he begins to look for new apartments, preferably in LA. He wants to get out of this small town, and he wants to make something of himself, enough to prove to Travis what an idiot he is, and how much better off he is without him.
His dials his father and explains what happened, and his father sends him a little extra money for breaking their lease, he even offers to help him move once he's found a place. Of course, he also offers to make Travis disappear while making it look like an accident, but despite how tempting it is, Stiles denies the offer.
Stiles finds a cute one bedroom apartment in a nice part of LA and it's actually affordable. It's in a young part of town, so it says most of the other tenants in the building are young and around Stiles' age. He sends an email off to the landlord and they get talking over the next few days, and agree that Stiles can come up to see it.
Stiles also contacts his current landlord to explain why has happened and she's nice enough to drop the fee for breaking the lease early, clearly feeling bad for the young tenant that she'd grown to like.
The last person he contacts is Jen, Travis' mother. He tells her about everything that happened and she apologizes profusely for having such a dumbass for a son, her words, not his. She comes by a few days later to collect the rest of his things and she gives him a large hug and well wishes for his future.
"I always knew you were too good for him, now go out and make him jealous! Make him regret sleeping with that bitch!" She grins and Stiles laughs through the tears.
"Thanks Jen, I'll make sure I do." He smiles and she nods her head.
"Make me proud!" She smiles and gives him one last parting hug.

A few days after everything happened, Stiles finally made his way to LA to look at the apartment, and it was everything he could've ever dreamed of. It had nice windows and was open concept, the neighbours all seemed welcoming and very nice, so he was looking forward to moving in.
One of the features that sold him the most was the gorgeous Greek god that lived across the hall.
Stiles and the landlord were discussing the apartment just outside the door to it, when stunning man, maybe a year or two older than Stiles, tan skin and a jawline that could cut diamonds. His eyes were a forest green colour, and his hair was jet black, with a nicely kept beard and stubble on his face.
Stiles stopped and stared for a moment as the man was unlocking his apartment door, briefly looking up and smiling at the two, before winking at Stiles and heading inside.
Stiles shakes his head to regain focus and turns back to the landlord, Wendy, who grins and chuckles.
"Well, we were taking about the laundry facilities downstairs, but I think something else has grabbed your attention. That's Derek Hale, tentant here since he finished school a year ago. Very nice guy, very kind. He'd give you the shirt off your back.Great guy, always a great listener too. I hope you get to know him." She smiles and Stiles chuckles and nods.
"Yeah, I hope I do too." He smiles and looks at his new neighbours front door.
He's not looking to get into a new relationship yet, he's got to much scarring on his heart right now, but he hopes he can make a new friend here. Heaven knows he needs one right now.
•••••
Two weeks later, Stiles and his dad are moving in Stiles' boxes and new furniture. Stiles splurged and bought a new bed, he didn't want the other one, so it was being delivered tomorrow. After a hard day's work and a takeaway dinner with his dad, who sadly had to drive back to Beacon Hills that night, Stiles was working on unpacking his stuff, finding new homes for them.
He had run into a few of his new neighbours throughout the day, but he was yet to encounter Derek again.
He was thinking about what jobs he could apply for here when there was a knock at his front door.
He sheepishly opened it to find Derek, and a slightly shorter, younger looking man with curly blonde hair standing outside his door.
"Umm, hi." Stiles smiles gently and Derek nods while the blonde waved at him.
"Hi! I'm Isaac, and this is Derek. We live across the hall and we noticed you were moving in today. We didn't want to intrude earlier, but did you want to come over and hang out? Our friends are over having pizza and playing video games, so we thought that you being new around here, might want to come meet some new people." The blonde man, now known as Isaac asks and Stiles smiles and nods.
"Sure! I'd love to! Just let me grab my phone." Stiles smiles and leaves the door open to run back to his living room and grab his phone from where it was charging.
"I'm Stiles, by the way. Stiles Stilinski. Don't ask about the name, my actual name is Polish and incredibly hard to pronounce." Stiles chuckles at their confused faces and closes his door behind him.
Derek and Isaac lead Stiles into their living room where a group of people are sitting on the couches and the floor, cursing and laughing as they try to beat each other at Mario Kart.
"Hey guys! This is Stiles! He's our new neighbour!" Isaac announces and they pause the game to look up and say hi.
"Stiles this is Erica and her boyfriend Boyd. That's Lydia and Jordan, Jackson and Ethan, that cute one there is my boyfriend Scott, so hands off." Isaac introduces them and gets nudged by Derek.
"Be nice."
"Okay! Jeez! Anyway! Next to Scott is Kira, then Cora who's Derek's younger sister."
"Hands off." Derek glares at Stiles and Stiles puts his hands up in defence.
"Whoa man! No worries there. I don't swing that way. Unless what's between their legs can fuck me, it's not my cup of tea." Stiles blurts and Derek's glare turns into a grin.
"And that's everyone!" Isaac says breaking the sexual tension that was slowly building from where Derek was eyeing up Stiles.
Isaac gestures for Stiles to take a seat on the couch, and that's when the questions start.
"So Stiles, where're you moving from?" Erica asks and Stiles smiles.
"Beacon Hills, about an hour from here." He says and Scott jumps up.
"I KNEW I KNEW YOU!" He shouts and goes over to high-five him.
"Stilinski, right? Your dad's the sheriff. I was a nerdy punk in high school so no doubt you don't remember me."
"Your mom's Melissa right? A nurse at the hospital? I think I remember running into you a few times when we were little. I spent a lot of time there when I was little." Stiles explains and Scott nods.
"Why were you always there? Are you clumsy and were always breaking bones?" Lydia smiles and Stiles shakes his head.
"Not quite, I am very clumsy though. You'll have to wrap me in bubble wrap soon enough." He smiles and Derek sits down on the armrest beside him.
"Then why'd you spend all that time in the hospital?" Jackson asks and Stiles takes a breath before speaking.
"My mother was in the hospital until I was 10. She had brain cancer and eventually it took her memory from her. She forgot who I was, so I stopped going to see her, it only upset her. She passed away a few months after I turned 10." He explains and the room grows quiet.
"I'm so sorry Stiles." Derek says to him quietly and places a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Thanks." Stiles replies before changing the conversation.
After a little while and some great conversations, someone asks Stiles why he's moving to LA.
"My ex-boyfriend Travis. I loved him, and I thought he loved me, at least until I came home to find him in bed with some blonde bimbo. I threw him out with his stuff and looked for somewhere new. His mom loved me more than she did her own son, came to me and told me to make him jealous, and to make him regret ever hurting me, and that's what I intend to do out here. I like it here so far. Lots of nice people. It's a beautiful city too. I'm hoping to get in at the local police department working forensics." Stiles explains and the group of his new friends all nod their head in agreement and understanding.
"Derek here is an author. He likes writing crime novels so maybe you could give him a hand with it?" Cora asks with a grin. Derek blushes and Stiles turns to look at him.
"I'd be happy to! If you want to, that is." Stiles says with a smile to Derek who blushes even more before nodding.
••••••
Over the next couple of months, Stiles settles perfectly into their group of friends. They love his sense of humour and they find his nerdy and over energetic personality, claiming it brings a little more excitement into their lives.
Derek and Stiles eventually find themselves hanging out with each other more and more, even whenever their group of friends aren't around. They each have a spare key to each other's apartment, and they've learnt to come and go as they please. Stiles has learnt a lot about Derek over the months he's been living here. Derek has an older sister named Laura and an annoying but kinda funny uncle Peter who stops by sometimes. His parents passed away in a house fire when he was younger, so Peter is a parental figure to him now. He's 25, a year older than Stiles and the rest of their friend group, very much gay, and he went to school for English and literature, with dreams of becoming an author. He was funny, and he was a great listener like Wendy had told him. Overall he was a great guy, so it wasn't much of a surprise when Stiles found himself falling in love with him.
"Sti? You home?" Stiles hears a voice call from his front door and he steps out into his living room with his bath towel tied around his waist and one drying off his hair.
"Yeah Der! Just got out of the shower, I'll be a second." He calls back and he hears Derek walk further into the apartment.
"Hey! Want to come watch a movie? Endgame is on Disney+ now." Derek smiles and Stiles nods his head.
Derek follows Stiles into his bedroom and lays on his bed while he puts clothes on, only peaking once or twice to catch a glimpse of the hottest ass he's ever seen, but Stiles didn't need to know that.
"Is Isaac home too?" Stiles asks as he pulls his t-shirt over his head and Derek shakes his head.
"Went to Scott's for the night. I'm kinda surprised that they haven't just moved in together, they've been dating for 3 years now." Derek sighs.
"But then you'd be lonely!" Stiles pretends to pout and Derek grins.
"I've got you. Either you'll be across the hall still, or you'd just have to move in with me." Derek says and Stiles shakes his head with a chuckle.
"You'd get sick of me too quick." He sighs and Derek shakes his head.
"Impossible! You're too much fun. If I can put up with Isaac, I can put up with anyone. I think we'd get along well." Derek smiles and Stiles blushes briefly.
"Well, if the time comes, we could give it a shot." Stiles smile and Derek cheers.
"Now come on, let's go watch that movie." Stiles chuckles and drags Derek off his bed.
•••••
Later that night, they're curled up on the couch, sharing a blanket and a popcorn bowl. They've long since finished Endgame, and have moved on to watching The Last Jedi.
"There's so much sexual tension between them!" Stiles sighs and Derek chuckles.
"I swear if they pull a Luke and Leia situation again, I'm personally going to kick their asses." He complains and Derek shakes his head while continuing to chuckle.
"They'd make a cute couple though." Stiles finishes and Derek turns to look at him.
"You know, Isaac and Scott said something to me the other day. It was kinda odd, but I kinda see it." He starts and Stiles turns to look at Derek.
"What? Did they say you looked like a baby without your beard? Because I've already told you Der, you do!" He jokes and Derek shakes his head.
"No. But thanks for reminding me." He laughs rubbing his chin where his light beard is growing back.
"I think the beard make you look hotter. Just my professional opinion as your gay best friend." Stiles smirks and Derek sticks his tongue out at him.
"Anyway, what'd they say?" Stiles asks and Derek regains his focus.
"They said, with the agreement of the rest of our friends, that we, as in you and me, would make a good couple." He says and Stiles feels his heart and stomach do a flip.
"What?"
"Yeah. They think we'd be good together." Derek chuckles lightly and Stiles stares at his lap.
"Well, what'd you say back to them?" He asks after a moment.
"I told them they were crazy." Derek answers and Stiles' heart sinks.
He nods his head and continues to stare at his lap before feeling a hand brush his cheek.
"I told them they were crazy, because we would be so much better than just good together." Derek smiles and Stiles' cheeks fill with a a hard blush as he tries to find the right words to respond with.
"Stiles, my gay best friend, my hot as hell, gay best friend, will you go out on a date with me?" Derek asks and Stiles gaps like a fish for a moment before nodding and leaning forward to lay his forehead on Derek's shoulder.
"You just gave me a heart attack, you do realize that right?" Stiles groans and Derek chuckles.
"Awwwwww, but you like me too much to hold it against me." Derek smiles but Stiles shakes his head before smacking him.
"Not anymore!" He pouts before allowing himself and Derek to sit side by side, their hands finding each other's to hold.
"Hate you." He laughs and Derek chuckles.
"There's no way you could ever hate me."
"That's true." Stiles smiles.
•••••
Their first date was the best Stiles had ever been on. They went for dinner at a cute little diner where they ate curly fries, Stiles' favourite, and drank milkshakes while talking about all the stuff they already talked about. It was comfortable, and although both were slightly nervous, they had so much fun. They ended their perfect night with a walk on the beach, where Derek gave Stiles a kiss on the cheek that simply wasn't enough for Stiles, who in return, planted a kiss on Derek's lips. That shocked the heck out of them both, but neither were complaining.
One date turned to two dates, which turned into ten. By the end of the tenth date, Derek finally plucked up the courage to ask Stiles to be his official boyfriend, to which of course Stiles answered with "hell yes!".
After they became official, they finally told their friends about their relationship, only to be met with 'why are we telling us something we already know' faces.
They were happy, and although they were yet to go all the way physically, something they had agreed to wait on, there definitely some nights that making out led to moaning and some sticky boxers.
•••••
They'd been dating for 5 months when Stiles unlocked the door to his apartment and was surprised to find the lights already on.
"Der? I thought you were having dinner with Cora tonight?" He calls out and places his keys down on the kitchen counter.
"Der?" He calls out and feels arms wrap around his waist while kisses are being placed on his neck.
But something is off; there's no stubble. Even if Derek shaves in the morning, by this time of day, he's already growing stubble back.
Stiles pauses a moment before taking in the smell of the cologne.
"Travis, what are you doing here?" Stiles whispers and Travis reaches around to grab hold of Stiles' privates.
"Taking back what's mine. I love you Stiles, and you're meant to be with me. Come home. Come home and we can put everything behind us." He says and Stiles moves to smack his hand away from his flaccid member.
"I have never hated someone as much as I hate you, do you understand that? You cheated on me. You made that choice, and I made the choice to leave you after that. You have no right to me anymore." Stiles spats at him.
Travis pushes Stiles up against the wall, hands pinned above his head.
"I made a mistake. She isn't the same, she's doesn't know her way around a cock like you do. Is that what you've been doing while you've been here? Sucking and fucking any man that walks by? Always knew you were a slut." Travis smirks and kisses Stiles on the lips, full of tongue and saliva, making Stiles feel sick to his stomach.
"Stop!" Stiles yells out but Travis slaps him across the face.
"Shut up! You're mine and you know it." He yells at Stiles before kissing him again, once again grasping his clothed member.
Stiles begins to sob and tries to fight him off, but he's stronger than Stiles.
After a few moment however, Stiles' front door swings open and Derek comes running in.
"Get off my boyfriend you psycho!" He yells as he tears the other man off of Stiles, whose hands finally fall from where they're pinned, and he falls to the floor.
Derek begins wrestling with Travis, who is no match for Derek because Derek has him knocked unconscious in a matter of seconds.
Derek runs back to Stiles and scoops him up in his arms, murmuring comforting words to him, and gently kissing his forehead.
"Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" Derek asks and Stiles shakes his head.
"Thank you for coming. As soon as I realized the door was locked but the lights were on, I knew it wasn't you in my apartment, and anyone else would've answered me when I called out." Stiles explains and Derek nods.
"Cops are on their way. He'll be arrested for sexual assault as well as breaking and entering. You'll have enough to get an restraining order from him too." Derek explains and Stiles nods in relief.
The cops show up shortly after and take Travis away. They take Stiles' statement as well as Derek's
"Derek."
"Yes baby."
"I want to move in with you." Stiles whispers and Derek nods his head.
"Nothing would make me happier." Derek smiles gently at his boyfriend.
"I love you Derek." Stiles says and Derek smiles brighter.
"I love you too, Stiles."
•••••
It ends up being a great idea! Stiles ends up moving into Derek and Isaac's two bedroom apartment, while Isaac and Scott choose to move into Stile's one bedroom. It's a pretty easy move, and in a matter of days they have everything properly switched over and are making themselves at home in their new apartments.
Stiles and Derek obviously share a bed, so they decide to turn the other bedroom into a spare room, just in case one of their friends wants to spend the night.
And once they start living together, let's just say that Stiles and Derek are attached at the hip and are thoroughly enjoying all of their time together.
Their friends make fun of them sometimes, claiming their as horny as teenagers who can't keep their hands off one another, but to Stiles and Derek, it's not just sex, it's making love and showing each other how much they love one another. They feel as if they've met their other half to their soul, and they couldn't imagine being this happy with anyone else.
After dating for nearly a year, the couple makes the trip back to Beacon Hills for their first Christmas together, and Derek finally gets the honour of meeting Stiles' father, something that was long overdue. Mr. Stilinski gives him a stern warning but then pulls him into a hug and thanking him for making Stiles so happy. They visit Claudia's grave where Derek places roses on the tombstone and talks to her as if she can hear him. He thanks her for making such a wonderful son, and the love of his life. This of course causes Stiles to start sobbing and he hugs Derek tightly while thanking him for being so amazing.
Stiles would later return the favour of visiting Derek's parents, placing lilies on their joint stone and telling them all about how great of an author their son is, and how a big company is finally publishing his first book.
•••••
After 4 years of dating, witnessing Scott and Isaac, and Lydia and Jordan get married, Derek finally gets down on one knee and asks Stiles, the absolute love of his life, to marry him in front of all their friends and family. Stiles begins crying almost immediately but nods his head yes like a madman. After Derek slides the ring on his finger, Stiles pulls him into a long kiss and wraps his arms around his shoulders to pull him into a tight hug.
With their friends all cheering around them, Stiles and Derek wipe each other's tears of joy from their faces and John comes over, places a hand on Derek's shoulder and giving his son a hug.
"Treat him right." John says to Derek and he nods quickly.
"I wouldn't ever dream of hurting him." Derek smiles and Stiles smiles back at him.
"Damn straight! I know how to get away with murder too well." He laughs and John smirks while Derek rolls his eyes and pulls Stiles in for one more kiss.
"I love you." Derek whispers to him and Stiles gives him a gentle kiss back.
"I love you too."
•••••
Six months later, Stiles and Derek are standing at the alter together, holding hands as they say their vows.
When the minister announces them as husband and husband, the pews filled with their friends and family explode into cheers, as the two seal their vows with a kiss, Derek dipping Stiles who laughs into the kiss.
They walk down the isle as a married couple, and they can't believe they've finally made it to this point in their lives.
After their reception is over and everyone has headed home including the newly married couple, Stiles pulls Derek into their bedroom and lays them down on their bed.
"You know, I'm really glad you dated Travis." Derek smiles and Stiles makes a face of confusion.
"Why? He was a lying, cheating asshole. He was a mistake." Stiles says and Derek chuckles.
"Because, if he hadn't been such a lying, cheating asshole, I would have never met you. I would have never become best gay friends with you, and I would have never have asked you out. I would have never asked your father for his blessing to marry you, and I wouldn't have the worlds best, not to mention the sexiest, husband laying in bed with me right now. So, I'm glad you dated him. It was the best mistake you ever could've made." Derek smiles and Stiles wipes the tears from his eyes before climbing overtop of his husband.
"You and your damn way with words! When you put it like that, then I couldn't have made a better mistake because it got me here, with you." Stiles smiles down at him and giving him a peck on his lips.
"Now, no more talk about him. He'll never be a part of my life again, only you, and you alone. So, right now, I suggest that you take of that incredibly sexy suit you have on, and help me consummate this marriage." Stiles smirks and Derek flips them over.
"As you wish, my dearest husband."
