"Umm...G-G-G-Gaara?" I heard a faint voice calling out to me. "G-Ga-Gaa-G-Gaara?" It called again and this time I woke up.
"Yes?" I said in a stern tone.
"We should get back to work" she tried to get her voice through into my still drowsy head.
"Wait for some time. I'm still tired." I answered sleepily and my hold onto something tightened a bit. It was something soft, curvy and smooth. I liked the touch of that. It was almost like another human.
"Gaara!" She exclaimed.
"What?" I was awake now.
"We should start working" she whined.
"But if we are not well rested, we won't be able to function properly." I countered.
"But we don't have the time to be well rested"
"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast"
"Don't remind me of her"
"What she said had a point."
"Gaara, let's get to work!" She ordered this time.
"I hope I am not interrupting anything?" Kankuro came in as he saw me and her, lying on my sand and me holding her tight at the waist.
"Nothing of the sort, Kankuro. We were just getting back to work" I answered him coolly.
"That's hard to believe, but okay" Kankuro teased.
"State your business, Kankuro. You're talking to the Kazekage" I said annoyed at his interruption.
"So, Kazekage-sama, I came to check on the status of the dress" he explained.
"It's right there in the sand mannequin" I told him. Kankuro-san noted it in his report and closed the door behind him.
"Hey? You okay?" I asked her touching my face, caressing it like I had never done with anyone before. It felt like I cared about her. I liked this feeling.
"Are you okay?" She got annoyed. "Do you know what he thought of us now? Ugh! Do you really not understand what he thought we were doing?" She pressed the bridge of her nose.
"He thought we were sleeping together, which we were." I answered coolly.
"Yeah. We were sleeping together but he must've thought we are-"
"Interested in each other." I finished her sentence. I figured the only way to know for sure if she was interested in me was to actually tell her that I was.
"Yeah. And I really don't think- wait. What? You understood that this meant telling Kankuro that you are romantically interested in me?" She looked shocked and confused.
"Yes. I did." I said calmly.
"So, you don't mind... Wait. Oh my god. What is going on." She stepped off the sand just roamed around a bit while panicking, smiling, blushing and frantically trying to think of something.
"Listen" I held her wrist and pulled her back into my chest and enclosed her in a warm embrace, "We will think and talk about this later. Let's focus on the dress for now. The wedding is in 3 days."
"3 days?!" She yelled. "Okay. Okay. We don't have time at all! Let's begin with the next roses! We have to cover the entire cloth in roses." I threaded the needle already in my hand and gave one to Gaara too.
We started working on the roses. I held them on with my sand and we worked on them together. This is the first time I can say that I enjoyed doing something. It was unnecessary for me to help, but I did it and it felt good.
It was already evening and we hadn't had lunch.
"Let's go out for lunch today. We'll eat and be back soon to start working again." I suggested. She agreed and we left.
"Kazekage-sama!" The shopkeeper gasped.
"A table for 2, if you don't mind" I smiled. It was nice to be treated by villagers like a human. They didn't listen to me because they were scared of me or they didn't listen to me because otherwise I would kill them, they listened and respected me as nothing more than their Kazekage. I always thought about the time I fought Naruto which had gotten me here today.
"Ofcourse" and the waiter led us to our table.
"Gaara, this restaurant is too expensive." She whispered to me, "I don't have that much money!"
"Don't worry. I'll pay. My treat for everything you've done for me till now" I smiled warmly at me. She smiled back. This wasn't her usual friendly smile, this was more than that. As Shikamaru said, I could understand it intuitively as a human. I was surprised how adept my brain as a human actually worked with people who I paid attention to. I had experienced this quite a lot of times with Kankuro and Temari. I could tell they were happy or sad, even if they were trying to hide it. It was a lot of fun to just watch Temari hide her smile when she was around Shikamaru.
"Oh! Gaara!" Shikamaru waved as he and Temari entered the same restaurant as us.
"Oh! Shikamaru! Temari! We are just done. You are just a little late. Otherwise you could've joined us." I smiled tried to hide how annoyed I was. This was just like Kankuro. She stood beside me trying not to embarrass me or herself.
"I'm sorry" I said as he held on to her waist, "but we have to leave. We have a wedding dress to prepare. Now, if you would excuse us."
She smiled a little to herself.
You look really handsome, smiling like that" she complimented me sheepishly.
"Thank you" I smiled with a blush on my face which I didn't realize was there until later. We finished our lunch in no time while talking to each other and left the place for the Kazekage premises.
"Gaara, are you really okay with this? Considering your position and everything? Like what will the media say and other important political stuff?" She asked me with a really concerned expression on her face. I still held on to her waist as we arrived to the office again.
"Listen, I wasn't doing nothing when I was avoiding you. I sorted out my feelings. I know I want you to love me. I want the world to know that I love you. I want you to know that I love you. And other political and media concerns don't matter much to me as long as I have you on my side." I smiled at her trying to be as assuring as I could.
She looked like she believed me. She looked like she was happy with the answer. We went back to the workspace to finish our work on the dress.
The only problem with the dress was she took it up all on herself. This dress was a work of 4 professionals, and here's one professional and one newbie doing the same work in 3 days. She had a goal in her mind that seemed unrealistic, but she made it seem like it was possible.
We stitched on all the roses. They weren't completely down to the level of the nets which weren't completely covering the laces. It kind of made sense to me because if you covered the previous layer up completely, then there's no use of the previous layer unless the layer above it is transparent. I wouldn't exactly mind getting into designing once I retire from this Kazekage business.
I was thinking as I sewed on with her. We didn't just sew Temari's happiness into this, we had also sewn our love for her, our respect for her in this. I had gotten to know so much about a person through an activity they like to do. Is this what they call fate? Is this why destiny is said to be such an important part of people's lives?
Whenever I looked at her, she would have her complete attention focused on what she was stitching. Nothing else in the world existed for her at that point of time. She put all of herself in what was in front of her. She didn't realize I was there in the room and I could keep staring at her.
Every once in a while she would look over to me just to see if I was working or not maybe, maybe to check if I hurt myself or not or maybe some other reason. I liked it. I smiled when she looked at me and we got back to work.
The roses were quite a task. I messed some of them up because they were delicate and even a small wrong stitch made a nasty looking big hole in the cloth. Whenever I messed up, she chuckled a little and said, "Maybe your hands should be reserved for fighting." She would slowly and gently pick out the flower and put another one in its place sewing through the exact same holes that she had made before.
She would accidentally brush her hand against mine, or her hair would get stuck in my coat. I tried to not let her notice but eventually she would notice me struggling and she would instantly solve all the tangles.
"It is almost morning" I said looking astonished as I peeked out of the window to see little light behind the desert dunes.
"Let's watch the sunrise together then?" She offered to which I obliged.
We both went up to the office balcony and stood there waiting for the sun to rise. The sunrise and sunset were the only times the sun was bearable and beautiful in the desert.
"A wedding is a very important affair, ne?" She sighed.
"Yeah. She is going to marry the man she loves. She is going to make her own family with him" I said, my hair flying in the breeze, me looking at the horizon and her looking at me.
"That's why I want to make it perfect for her." I smiled at him.
"That's very kind of you. It's rare for people to care about someone else dream. Even parents fail to do that sometimes." I continued.
"Gaara, can I ask you something honestly?" She looked at me, deeply staring into my eyes, as if she would just put her hand ahead and get my soul.
"Go ahead." I said gazing back, not flinching.
"How did you fall in love with me?" She asked me.out of the blue.
I just scoffed a bit and said, "That question has a very long answer."
"I guess we will have to do it later then" she sighed disappointed with my reaction. It's not new to me that girls always want compliments. Temari always behaves like that after she buys anything new for her fan or her Kimono. She always is like that after she has just defeated any enemies.
"Well, there is something, I want to do now." I blushed. I knew it this time. I was scared. I didn't know if she want it or if she was ready for it. I had prepared myself for resistance.
"What?" She asked calmly and smiling.
I grabbed her waist and pulled her closer to me. I had seen enough of Shikamaru and Temari to figure out that she would like me doing that.
"G-G-G-Gaara?" She stuttered. A pink tint ran across her face from ear to ear.
I put my forehead against hers and slowly whispered, "You have taught me the meaning behind this character on my forehead. Thank you"
"G-G-Gaara" she blushed and turned around instantly hearing those words from me.
"Thank you" I whispered hugging her from behind.
