Chapter 5
When I woke up, my head hurt and I was coughing. My head felt like someone had shoved sandpaper down my throat. Someone came over and sat beside me.
“Hey, Louis.” It was Harry.
“Hey”
“How are ya man, you seemed pretty drunk?” I nodded.
“I feel like a million bucks.” I lied. “Hey anything important happen when I was asleep?”
“Oh yeah the girl fainted when she found out you were drunk.” He said in a casual voice. He didn’t even use her name; he was always just referring to her as the girl. For some reason this got under my skin. I would have sent him the death glare but it would have been lost in the darkness of the room.
“Is she alright?”
“How would I know after she fell down, we found her and made sure she was alive. I offered to “watch her” but Liam said he would do it.”
“Is everyone asleep?” I whispered suddenly realizing no one else was talking.
“Yep as far as I know.”
“So what are we going to do?”
“Well wait I guess, soon people will notice we are missing, and Paul will reconnect this the evacuation team and realized they never had gotten the final orders to get us out.
Mercy Pov:
I woke up snuggled into someone’s warm chest, after completely realizing the position I was in I quickly scrambled to my feet only to lose my balance by tripping over someone else feet. Of course no one caught me because this wasn’t some fairy tale. I hit the ground with a thud, and groaned. Had I seriously lost my skills after only a one month leave?
“Megan are you alright?” His voice left shivers down my spine and my mind blank. I recomposed myself and answered Louis.
“Yeah I’m fine just don’t come closer!”
“Uh yeah, okay sure.” He stuttered a bit and I wasn’t sure why.
“Hey, I’m sorry. I know I’m not even on the list of people you would want to get stuck in an elevator with but I might have figured out a way to charge someone’s phone and get service.” I said on limb, I got off the ground and walked with my arms outstretched to a corner of the elevator. I had a one in four chance of having the food cart in that corner. When my fingers lightly grazed the cool metal of the cart I knew what I had to do.
After all the boys were awake I told them my plan, and I think it was Harry that had shoved his phone into my stomach by accident instead of finding my outstretched hand, I was hoisted up again to unlock the hatch.
Once I climbed out I made sure to always have two points of contact with the roof of the elevator. Visualizing what I had seen earlier when the generator had worked, I made my way to the control box. After prying it open, I wiped my bleeding fingers on the hem of my sweatshirt. After gathering my courage I undid one of the plugs, I froze for a minute waiting for the elevator to launch into free fall, but the wind blowing through my ears remained calm. I slowly exhaled and executed what I need to do to charge the phone. After the phone lit up with the battery symbol I clicked the button to bring it to life. I pulled the cord and used the phone as a flashlight to make my way to the hatch. After yelling I poked my head through the hole and looked down at the faces of One Direction. I brought the phone up to my face and grinned. Everyone high fived each other and cheered. I was sorry to end their happy fest.
“Okay one of you needs to call who ever will get us out of here the fastest! I can’t because they will think it’s a prank call.” I said this slowly, my head hurt, and all of us hadn’t eaten in a while since all the food from the cart was gone. “The only other problem is that the cable isn’t long enough and the phone will die soon because all this energy is just the lingering energy stored in the cables.
“I’ll do it!” It was Louis.
“Okay one two three, UP!” The four boys heaved Louis up to the opening I scrambled back to let him through. He slid over to me and I placed the phone in his hand careful not to touch him with my bleeding fingers. Some blood must of touched him because he recoiled and grabbed the phone. He dialed a number and started shouting. I moved away, but by this time he was done on the phone and was yelling out to the boys the good news and was looking at me. He was about to go back through opening at the top of the elevator when he grabbed the sleeve of my sweatshirt and pulled it up. He gently reached for my bloody fingers and held them to his lips and breathed onto them. They warmed up immensely and I wiggled them away from him. He was grinning and smiling but by the time I said thank you he was already down the hatch.
TEN MINUTES LATER
We were all sitting in the back corner of the elevator like the man on the phone had told Louis to do. Suddenly the darkness didn’t feel so cold anymore, and the lights of the elevator flickered on. The power was back! Everyone was cheering, especially when the doors suddenly cracked open, like they belonged in a museum. Everyone got up and scrambled out as fast as possible. The door started to squeak and groan as it closed and I was almost out but then I realized I had left my phone with all my pictures on it! I turned around to go and get it but multiple hands grabbed me and pulled me out. One pair let go and I slouched in the other someone’s arms as I watched the elevator doors close on the only thing I had left of my old life. The person spun me around until I was hugging them and them me. Tears streamed down my face, and ruined their shirt. We were in some hallway, and suddenly the door to the stairs burst open and there stood a police team, paramedics, some Paparazzi and Simon Cowell. There was man in the back dressed in a black suit. He locked eyes on me and beckoned me over. I took one last look at the elevator boys as the photographers and medics surrounded them. As I was turning around I saw one last glint of blue eyes among the chaos.
