"honey, let's get going."

the soft voice floating towards his ears and gentle touch on his forearm made ushijima come to his senses. the man looked over his shoulder to see his wife looking up at him with her wide, round eyes. he nodded curtly and returned to the mirror, adjusting his suit just a little.

his wife, miyasaki rina, took her hand off his arm and sighed softly, staring at his reflection, before deciding to head to the car first.

the man stared at his reflection for another solid minute, checking for any stray hairs and any creases on his suit. feeling everything was a go, he walked out to the car, where she was waiting.

"sorry for the wait," he said as he got into the driver's seat.

"it's okay," she said with a smile, then reaching over to lace her hand in his.

this contact didn't last for long, for he let go of her hand and reached for the handle, starting the engine.

it was a little stiff and awkward, this marriage. despite being together for three years, everything felt foreign to him. he still blamed himself for the little — or actually, big — screw-up back then, and he hated himself for it.

upon reaching the destination, cameras flashed and reporters' voices were mixed together, everything just becoming one indistinct blur. ushijima and rina stepped out of the car, a valet parker rushed in to take over, security guards pushed stray fans away. slowly, ushijima stuck his arm out for rina to wrap hers around, the couple walking into the hotel.

they were there for an event, supposedly, whereby the most influential people who were presently in japan attended. ushijima was invited and he felt apprehensive about the whole thing, because there might be a tiny chance she would be there.

"welcome, ushijima-san, miyasaki-san," the receptionist said with a bow, indicating their attendance on a list.

a server offered them wine, to which they both accepted a glass each. they remained quiet as they stepped into the grand ballroom, noting the calm ambience and people milling about. men clad in dark suits with their hair gelled back, and women in fancy evening gowns with elegant matching hairstyles.

"ushijima-san, it's good to see you," kageyama said as he approached his senior, arms locked with his own wife.

ushijima managed a polite smile, "same goes for you. how is the famiy?"

"it's quite alright," kageyama replied, just as two children of his own joined them, "what about you? planning on having any?"

ushijima and rina shared a look, a contemplating one with a tinge of uncertainty, then rina chipped in, "we're still considering."

kageyama nodded politely just as his son, ray, rugged on his jacket and the ravenette turned his attention to, "tou-san, can nee-chan and i go to the buffet table? we'll be back for dinner, promise."

"don't cause a ruckus," was all kageyama said, and ray and his daughter, hillary, exited the crowded ballroom expertly, dodging past the tall adults.
