rewrite of book 1's 'memories'

···

qq had been avoiding a certain cerulean-eyed setter for the past few days, or, at least, trying to.

a few days ago, she had caught kageyama kissing another girl. and it was not just any random girl; it was the most popular girl of their grade, himekawa mina: tall, gorgeous intelligent — it was no wonder kageyama liked her. (it was actually the other way round — he didn't even like himekawa in the first place.) since they were not even officially dating, qq decided to fake a smile, try not to break down over almost every single thing, and pretend to be her usual self. sugawara did notice something was wrong, but didn't dare to say anything just in case his instinct was the slightest bit wrong. (because maybe she had a bad day? the older setter would never know for sure.)

it was a wednesday afternoon, and qq was walking home by herself. she was standing at the traffic light, waiting for it to turn green so she could cross to the other side. when it did, she took a step forward, walking across the street.

suddenly, there was light coming closer to her, at first slowly, but then becoming brighter.

she turned to look at the source of the light. the driver then slammed the brakes, and the loud screeching of tyres followed.

a car was coming, and her eyes widened as she started to move away.

it was futile; it was too late.

that was the last she saw of anything.

qq's eyes began to open slowly, attacked by the sudden colour of blinding white around her, so she closed her eyes. the distinct smell of medicine entered her nose.

she realised, this is the hospital.

her head began to swim with thoughts as she started to adjust to the bright white when she opened her eyes by nary a crack, why am i here? did something happen?

suddenly, her head began to throb, as though someone tried to forcefully open it with a metal contraption. hissing in response, she grabbed her head (to which she felt the material of gauze on her skin and she realised that her head was bandaged), the swift movement attracting the attention of the people in the room whom she didn't even notice at all from the beginning.

"oh my god, qq, are you okay?" a certain female rushed upfront, hugging her so tightly she could barely breathe. all qq caught was the bright neon pink colour of what seemed like a windbreaker tied around this girl's waist.

"you're choking her," another girl interjected, "let her go before you give her actual brain damage."

the first girl let qq go, stared into the latter's eyes with concern, and said, "you can see us right? you're okay right?"

qq glanced at all the faces in the room. there were a total of five girls and twelve guys standing around her. the cramped feeling started to crawl across her skin and she found in oddly difficult to breathe.

"everyone, back up," a third girl with glasses and slightly chubby cheeks ordered, moving her hands to gesture everyone to move back, "she's overwhelmed."

the crowd began to take a few steps back, following the third girl's orders. calmness washed over qq before she started to panic, who are these people? do i know them?

"i'm really sorry," she said finally, her voice a little hoarse.

"what do you mean?" the second girl who told the first girl to let go, asked with a raised brow.
