Kayla

Walking the halls in my uniform, I smiled at all the professionals set up in the hall passing out pamphlets. Today was career day at school and it gave students a chance to spend their day in a stimulated work field of their choice. I really liked this because before wasting time in school, I had a day to see if I really wanted to go through with my career choice. Plus I was excused from all my classes today.

Since I'm really interested in human anatomy, I decided to be a doctor today. A surgeon to be exact. The program wasn't detailed enough for me to choose which type of surgeon I would like to be, but either way it sounds cool. Last year, I was a forensic scientist. It was fun going on a mock crime scene and working with other students to collect and test out evidence.

"Kayla, today you'll be in room 302." My home room teacher looked at her tablet and scanned my ID.

Going to the elevator, I made my way up to the third floor. Outside of the room was a lady, fully dressed in her surgery attire. She lowered her face mask to greet me and ask of my name. She then scanned my ID and handed me a name tag with a piece of paper explaining my duties for the day.

I walked into the big classroom to see it split up into two sections—one section was for nurses and the other for the doctors. With my name tag on, I went over to my assigned section and spoke to another doctor who would be assisting us. He passed me a white coat and asked to see my school tablet. Handing it to him, he typed for a few seconds and then pulled up my patients chart info.

"I'm going to put you with group two. You all's patient is Mrs. Cathy. The nurses are working with her at the moment. Be sure to go over your charts thoroughly."

My group of five introduced ourselves to each other and then examined the chart we had. Mrs. Cathy was experiencing abdominal pains and it was our job to figure out why and what needed to be done. We put our minds together with the help of the male doctor. He gave us a packet with tons of information and what to do and what not to do.

Once the nurses checked the woman's vitals, it was time for my group to see our patient. Although this was fake, Mrs. Cathy was great at pretending to have real stomach pains. Each of us had a chance to check her out and ask questions. With pain only on one side of her lower abdomen, I figured out it was her appendix that was giving her problems. The doctor gave me a sucker as a reward and I pretended not to be overly excited about it.

We scheduled her for an appendectomy—the removal of her appendix. Once the doctors and nurses were on the same page, the professionals announced they had a couple surprises for us. They uncovered four robotic dummies for the nurses and surgeons to work on. Also, they had a cadaver to show us real persevered human organs.

"Is that a dead body? I'm gonna be sick!" One of my dramatic classmates said.

"Respectfully, they're called cadavers. For those of you who don't know, people do donate their bodies to science and medicine. If this makes you uneasy, you're more than welcome to step into the hall for the remainder of the session." The female doctor made eye contact with her.

Two students stepped into the hall and I just shook my head. How the hell you wanna be a nurse or doctor and you're scared of a persevered body? They'll see a lot worse if they really want to step into the medical field. Any-who, I was ready to put on some gloves and get my hands to work. The human body is so interesting and I'm excited to finally see the inside of it in person.

Everyone had the chance to observe and poke at the cadaver. We examined the appendix, but also all the other organs. I took my finger, brushing it across the grooves of the human brain. We ended up spending a lot of time with the cadaver, that it was lunch before we knew it. My group and I washed our hands and went down to the cafeteria with our white coats still on.
