October 13th
Kayla
After getting the opportunity to sleep in today, I woke up around eleven in the morning. Since it was my seventeenth birthday, my parents allowed me to skip school. I was happy about that because I didn't feel like dealing with people on my special day.
With my pajamas still on, once I did my hygiene, I went downstairs. In the dining room, my parents had gifts spread out along with my favorite breakfast foods. I had chocolate chip waffles, eggs with cheese, grits, sausage, and a side of fruit. With a big smile, I thanked them and took a seat.
"You wanna eat before you open ya' gifts?" My dad asked with a big smile.
"Yes."
I took my time eating while also answering calls from family members wishing me a happy birthday. I was filled with joy and very thankful to reach another year of life. My daddy was also happy because he kept rushing me to finish eating.
"I'm just so thankful to see my baby girl turn seventeen. Let me be real and say I didn't think I'd see you turn five, man. I feel like it's my birthday because this day special to me too." He held his smile.
"Daddy, don't make me cry." I wiped my hands and grabbed my first gift, the biggest present.
"Shit, I'm bout to cry. You really growing into a beautiful young lady and I love every day that we get to spend with each other. You been rocking with me since times was hard and I'll never forget them moments. Baby Keem my mini me, but so are you. I don't care how old you get on me, you fa'eva daddy la' girl." He made me shed a tear.
"Awww. See, I had a speech too, but we'll all be crying." Mama wiped her eyes.
"Bring it, mommy. I'm ready." I grinned.
"Okay. I just wanna say I'm honored to be apart of your life and even though I didn't birth you, you're the best daughter I could ask for. You're literally perfect to me. You came into my life by surprise and I wasn't sure how the future would be with you in it, but I'm soooo happy I stuck around. You're the sweetest, smartest, most amazing young woman I know." Mama made an ugly face as she cried.
"Watching you grow has been great and seventeen years has sped by. I'm thankful that you're so obedient and you really make it easy on me and your daddy. You ain't shit like we used to be at your age and that means a lot. Continue coming to us with anything because no matter what, we're here for you. My wittle chocolate drop."
"Thanks y'all. But y'all know I wouldn't be how I am if it wasn't for y'all being the best parents ever. Both of y'all are like my best friends. Y'all allow me to be open and free while still teaching me lessons as I grow older." I opened the box to my first gift.
My first gift was a wireless electric guitar, it was black with specs of glitter. My great-uncle had taught me to play a few years ago and I could've sworn I was a real rockstar. With a smile, I thanked my parents and played a little tune.
"I need y'all to mind y'all business if y'all see me smashing this bad boy after a jam session." I joked.
"My fist gone smash ya' face if you waste my money." My daddy said.
"Why I knew you would say something crazy like that." I laughed and grabbed another gift.
This gift was a new pair of smart glasses. They were stylish like a pair of prescriptions with the newest update of technology. I put them on to record the rest of my gift opening from my point of view. My parents waved as I showed them off and then I grabbed my next present.
In my hands was a small box that contained a ring. It had my birthstone, an opal in the center of it. The light pink stone was encrusted with sparkly diamonds. I smiled and showed off the ring as I slid it on my pointer finger. Next, I opened a box for a diamond bracelet that Megan had got for me.
