The car was pleasantly quiet. There was a warm breeze drafting through the slightly rolled down window that ruffled Mitsuki's hair as she kept her eyes on the road. Masaru sat calmly beside her, enjoying the familiar view of the old town as they neared closer to their home.
They had left early that morning and now, as the sun sat at the top of the sky, they were finally arriving home. The job they had agreed to go on had been easy enough. As Mitsuki had said in the note they left for Katsuki, there was a pissed off ghost that a wealthy family had been dealing with and they had gone to push it's soul back where it belonged.
"Do you think Katsuki wrecked the house?"
"If he did he's the one cleaning it," Mitsuki scoffed. "You sent him that voicemail this morning so if anything happened he's definitely already hidden the proof."
Masaru hummed and turned back to looking out the window. They were coming up to their house, happy to finally see it after the busy week they'd had. They didn't take as many jobs as they used to, and as nice as it was to get back into the habit sometimes, it took a lot out of them.
As Mitsuki pulled into the drive, the first thing she noticed was all the curtains still closed. She turned to look at her husband, who looked just as puzzled as she did.
Katsuki was always up and about before 9am, and it was already noon. For him to leave the curtains closed at midday was never a good sign.
Masaru grabbed their luggage from the boot as Mitsuki unlocked the door. They stepped in and were met with an empty house. There were no signs of anything bad, but it didn't look like anyone was even in by how well kept and empty it was. The only hint that Katsuki was somewhere around was the faint noise of someone speaking.
"I'll take these upstairs, you go find the boy," Masaru walked across the large hall and up the grand staircase, dragging their suitcase behind him and a heavy bag flung over his shoulder.
Mitsuki followed the noise to the living room. The tv was on, playing an old hero film that she hadn't seen in years. On the couch, Katsuki was curled up with the blanket over the back of the seat wrapped around his body and his head resting on one of their soft pillows.
Katsuki's face was relaxed, but his skin was pale and his cheeks flushed. His hair was a complete mess, pointing out all over the place. Some of the strands were stuck to his forehead with sweat, while others were brushed back.
Mitsuki reached out and put the back of her hand to his forehead, frowning.
"Is he okay?" Masaru's voice appeared behind her.
"Looks like a fever," Mitsuki replied as her husband stood next to her, giving their son a puzzled look.
"He hasn't been ill in ages," Masaru said, his voice showing his obvious concern. His eyes drifted over to the tv. All Might. Katsuki hadn't wanted to watch those since...
"We should let him sleep," he said as he reached for the remote, turning the tv off. Mitsuki nodded and followed behind him to the kitchen. They opened the curtains to let some light into the dark room.
For a while, the only noise was boiling water in the kettle and cupboards being opened and closed. Then the water being poured, and the clanking of a spoon as it swirled ground coffee into the water. Mitsuki grabbed the milk and poured it in slowly.
There was a strange feeling dwelling in her stomach. The house seemed too quiet, too lifeless. Something sat heavily in the air that she couldn't quite put her finger on.
"Something doesn't feel right," she eventually said.
Masaru hummed and nodded, folding his arms across his chest as he leant back against the island. "You think it has anything to do with Katsuki watching an All Might film for the first time since... well, Izuku, you know."
