"It is your choice," he said, stepping so close to me that our lips were almost touching. "Either do what I say – or get another job." My heart stood still as I gazed up into his deep, dark, dangerous eyes... In a world where women's only role in life is to sit at home and look pretty, Lilly is determined to fight for her freedom. There's only one problem: a powerful man blocking her way.
OKAYYYY so. I didn't know what to expect with this story to be quite honest. The author messaged me saying to check out their story and I was like "sure, I like stories that have guys with suits on the cover they usually involve business and strong male characters." So I added it. Now I won't lie to you; I have had this story in my library for a couple of months and didn't touch it. I kept putting it off again and again then decided just about a week ago, maybe two, that I'll give it a go. Finally I read the first chapter (I started the first chapter several times before) and kept going. I closed out a few times, mainly because I was waiting for something and it took too long, but the second I got to chapter 5...I read the rest of it at 2 am without putting it down. I will admit it took me awhile to get into it, but once I did...I did. And I am so happy I did.
This story takes place in, I guess the Victorian era? Around the 18th century, men wore suits, women wore dresses, the whole ordeal. I love that. There are certain time periods that make me happy and excited to see and this era, along with the 1950's do just that. It is about a girl named Lily in London during this time period. It opens up with her dressed like a man in trousers, off to vote. Something illegal. Along the way she meets Mr.Ambrose, who believes Lily is a male and ends up hiring her. He finds out she is a female and expects that she won't take the job because HELLOOOO females can't vote, what makes you think a respected business man wants a girl working for him, he would be a laughing stock of London. So, he agrees to let her work...as long as she dresses like a man.
So take her going to work dressed like a man, dealing with her aunt who wants to marry her and her sisters off (she has quite a few), and the amount of unwanted suitors she encounters on top of that and badaboom badabing you get Storm and Silence. Oh and add the fact that she is secretly keeping her sisters secret, without her sister even knowing she knows. Yea. Now this isn't your typical love story, the heck if I know whether they get together or not, but it is so intriguing and original. It took me awhile to get use to them not having phones or computers and just finding out what a chocolate bar is, but once I did I fell in love.
Rikkard Ambrose does these sweet simple gestures that he will never admit to, but we see through his mystery. Lily does this adorable thing where she compares everything and everyone to him. I imagine she even goes as far as to think this: "Oh, Uncle isn't joining us for breakfast again...I wonder if Mr.Ambrose eats breakfast. Probably not, with his grumpy attitude in the morning." Yup, I really think she does that.
This story is a bowl of sarcasm, sassiness beyond belief, and just about the best thing ever. Rob Their, thank you for your incredible writing sir and for your impeccable imagination that made this story supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I give it 4.9 gold stars, the .1 that is missing is strictly due to the withdrawal of no update right now. So everyone please give it a chance, it may take a few chapters to really get into it, but trust me stick it out and you will love it just as much as me!
Soooo. Yea. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, I meant to post this on Thanksgiving but hey, I was eating. Sorry that it has been awhile but I have a stupid political movie open, three powerpoints in the making, and about 8 tabs open. College is rough and for some reason my political science teacher decided to assign two essays for us over the break (Hence why the political movie is there, for one of the essays) alongside that is my powerpoint speech for Communications, and I can't decide if I want to do informative, demonstrative, or persuasive so I am making all three and letting my teacher decide which is the best. Oh and getting ready to write my 8-10 page final paper for Rebels and Outsiders in Literature (The Beat Generation basically) so you can see I am swamped. But don't worry, I will be updating the rules next and more reviews (3 lined up to be written) and I may give a go at a story who knows? Okay bye.
