Queen of the Moon

2: Danger

The Darkseas did not arrive until sunset. They came with a small litter of soldiers, only King Darksea and his son, Cory. His son was at least in his upper twenties and unmarried. But I would imagine most women didn't want to live in absolute darkness for the rest of their lives. He wasn't bad looking either. As we were introduced in the dining hall, I curtsied, and he kissed my hand. I smiled at him and he looked annoyed as he moved onto the next person. 

I brushed aside the slight, not thinking anything of it as we ate our meal. The Darkseas had brought their own honeyed wine, supposed to be the best in the lands, though I didn't know how they grew grapes without sun. We all had a glass and I noticed instantly it made me dizzy and nauseous, I didn't want to drink anymore but Queen snapped at me to not be rude and to finish the drink we were gifted. I remembered the room going fuzzy and my head sagging over my plate with tiredness. And that was the last thing I remembered.

When I woke up, I was moving, in a carriage. It was not even my carriage; it was a black carriage with purple velvet seats. I could see the foliage moving besides us outside the window. The inside of the carriage had a potent smell of frankincense and myrrh. My head was rested in someone's lap, and as I was regaining consciousness even though my head felt dizzy, I slowly began to realize I did not know this person who's lap my head was in. With great difficulty, I lifted my head up to squint at the man who's head my lap was in, and after a bit of staring could remember, it was Prince Cory Darksea.

He noticed I was awake then, his eyes widened, "She's awake," he told the man across from him. I turned my head towards the guy, noticing instantly his sharp fingernails, skin like blackened ash, slowly looking up to see a tall thin frame and white eyes. My heart pounding out of my chest as I realized it was him. I tried to scream but no sound came out of my mouth and the man started chanting and I felt my eyes droop again.
