"Rosa! It's time to go to school!" Mama yelled from downstairs, where she was making breakfast.

"I'm coming! Just give me a sec!" Rosa responded back.

Rosa did not want to go to school. New class. New teachers. New students. New drama. New bullies. Everything was going to be terrible.

What if I mess up on my first day? Then everyone will think I'm weird. Stupid. Rosa thought into the mirror.

"Rosa!" Mama yelled again. "I don't want you to be late on your first day!"

"Ok. Here goes nothing!"

...

"Thanks for driving me mom!" Rosa blew her Mama a kissed.

"No problem sweetie. Soon enough, you'll be driving." Mama beamed. "Now hurry up so you're not late."

Rosa hurried off. She looked at the piece of paper they gave her in the mail.

Locker 287.

"Great. A corner locker." Rosa sighed. She grabbed her things from her backpack and went off to her first class.

Math.

Of course it's math. Rosa thought.

She walked in and the room went silent. The teacher stood up.

"Good morning class. I forgot to tell you we have a new student coming to this school. Rosa Sandoval. She is from Granville, Ohio. Come in sit down. I'm Mrs. Nelson."

Rosa sat down to the only empty table. Mrs. Nelson handed her a book.

"Open your book to page 186." Ms. Nelson started. "The reason we study mathematics is because..." her voice faded off.
