Niton kept his mouth closed as his dark eyes looked right through me. I growled lowly in frustration. I marched up to him and jabbed a finger at his chest.
"Tell me Niton." I wasn't leaving room for an argument. He was going to tell me now or I was going to leave.
Niton's eyes grew sad as he looked down on my smaller, angry form. My finger dug deeper into his chest, pressing harshly against his dark brown shirt.
"You won't like what I have to say, Stormy." Niton's voice was small and quiet. It hurt me to have made him feel this way but I needed to know. It was too important to just let go.
"If you really care about me like you say you do, you'll tell me," I said quietly back, my hand inching forward to wrap around Nitons while the other fell back to my side. Niton gripped my hand in his, looking down at our entwined fingers longingly.
My heart skipped a beat seeing his expression.
"The man you saw me with was a demon. His name is Raum. He was after the blood I've been collecting," Niton began.
"The vial..." I trailed off, brows furrowed as I connected the dots.
"Yes. It was filled with the blood I found." Niton nodded in confirmation as he spoke.
My mind immediately went back to the attack my parents had fought in. The forest I lived in now had been destroyed by a monstrous demon years back. There was still evidence of the fight if you looked hard enough.
"Was the blood from the King of Fairies Forest? My home?" I asked frantically. What was that man going to do with the blood?
"Yes, it was." Niton muttered. The regret was easy to see but that didn't mean he was off the hook.
"What is he using it for? Why does he need it?" My voice shook and Niton's hand tightened around mine in a sign of comfort.
Nitons eyes cast away and it caused me to tense further. A sigh escaped his lips. My panic grew as the seconds passed.
"He's going to use the blood to summon his legion of demon servants. His goal is to destroy the forest. That was his goal the first time." Niton glanced back at my eyes. They had gone wide in shock.
I dropped his hand and stumbled back. Fallow stopped me from falling down. His goal the first time? Was Niton involved in the first attack?
"Why?" I yelled, I turned on Niton then, "More importantly, why are you helping him!? That's my home! You know that!"
I was seething. I thought I could trust him. I told him things I never planned to tell anyone.
Niton grew closer and I took quick steps back, pushing Fallow as I did. Fallow stumbled at my rushed and messy movements.
"I'm a demon Stormy. I work for Raum. It's my job. It has been for years." Niton tried to reason. It was a shitty reason and only made me angrier. It also confirmed my theory that Niton had been a part of the fight that could have cost my parents their lives and did cost other fairies theirs.
"I thought you loved me. You know that's where my home is, where my family is!" My glare grew harsher and I began to bare my sharp teeth in warning.
Niton held my gaze, sadness coating his. I could see the muscles in his exposed arms clenching as he forced himself to stay put. Good, I would have punched him if he got any closer right now.
"I had no choice. By working under him, he owns me," Niton said, his voice lowering again. I tried my hardest to see reason behind his words.
Would I have done that if I was in his place? Like he said, Raum or whatever owned him, maybe he really had no choice.
"I think I always knew you were a demon. Since the cave," I whispered, my gaze leaving his and shifting to the ground. I didn't know what else to say about him working under Raum. We would only continue to fight over it.
"I know that changes things," Niton laughed dryly. "I was trying to get you to fall for me before I told you right out about everything."
My heart pushed to tell him how I felt, how he achieved his goal but my brain pushed back. I needed to focus on the issue of the demon blood before anything else.
I opened my mouth to speak and shift the topic but Niton began again.
"In the beginning, I didn't care what happened. I didn't care about the fairies forest or the fairies living there." Niton tried, grabbing my hands in his and I allowed it but kept as much space between us as I could.
"Everything changed when you came into my life. It's changed me. Since we met, I've been trying to find a way out of hurting your home and possibly your family. I know it sounds stupid and cliche but please believe me," Niton pleaded, squeezing my hands gently.
I bit my lip and tried to suck back the tears that threatened to fall. Niton grew closer and pulled my smaller form into his arms. I kept my arms down, one because Niton had them pinned down; two because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them. Push him away or hug him back. I couldn't decipher my emotions right.
"You have to believe me." I barely felt the tear that dropped on my arm. I sealed my mouth shut to hold my own cries back.
"How can I fix this? How can I prove my love for you Stormy?" Nitons arms tightening around me, almost becoming painful. I think he may have been afraid to let me go.
I slowly wiggled my arms free from the intense hold and wrapped them around his back. Niton took in a shuttered breath, again releasing a tear onto my arm.
"Help us stop them. That's how you can fix this."
