××Niton××
I stepped away from Stormy and his family as his father began scoping out the area.
Signs of demons and the dark energy they possessed could already be seen soaking through the ground. Bits of black dust floated up from the dying grass into the air. Each particle was making it easier and easier for Raum.
"Okay, Dion you're with me," Stormy's dad said, pointing Dion over to a group of darkening trees. They were large with long, thick branches. Easy to climb I assumed.
"Finch, you're on the ground. Choose the spot you think is best but try to stay close." The bulking redhead wasted no time in following his father's orders. I wish I knew the man's name but I was a little worried about asking. He was the father of the man I was trying to pursue.
I watched silently as Stormys father looked towards where we were still standing. I could see the conflict in the crease on his forehead and his step forward and then quickly back.
From what Stormy had told me, his father usually kept him from fights due to him not being skilled with knives. He was worried; I understood that but keeping him from battles meant he hadn't gained much experience and it ruined his confidence.
Instead of waiting for Stormys father to decide what he was going to do; I was going to give Stormy his job.
"Stormy." Stormy stood from his crouched position on the ground to stand beside me.
"I cannot kill Raum myself," His brows drew together in confusion, "He owns my soul right now so it is physically impossible for me to do it."
"What are we going to do? I don't know if the king will be here in time or if he can even kill him at all!" Stormy panicked. He grabbed onto my arm as an instinct as he spoke.
"Calm down. You are going to kill him." Stormy looked like he had seen a ghost.
"I can't do that." Stormy nervously stepped back, shaking his head quickly but I took his hand to stop him.
"I know you can. You're amazing with the bow and all you have to do his hit him right here," I explained while pressing two fingers to the center of Stormys forehead. His eyes crossed as he followed my movements.
"Why there?" He asked as I dropped my hand. That was the acceptance I was looking for.
"He has a crystal embedded in his forehead that helps contain his power. You break that and it will destroy his power and send him back." I could vividly remember him telling me that when he first took me under his wing. This was true betrayal.
"What about you?"
"What do you mean?"
"Will that release you?" It sent a warm feeling through me knowing he cared about what would happen to me.
"Hopefully," I said, shrugging. I really wasn't positive it would.
"Then I'll do it." Stormy's expression was pure determination.
I held my hand out and let a single arrow materialize. It was much different than most weapons I made. This was tipped with a rare gem called Solrate. Harder than diamond. The orange material was the only thing I knew of that would pierce his crystal.
Stormy took the arrow from between my two fingers, flipping it upwards so he could run his own finger across the colored tip.
"It's special," I would not explain more than that.
"I can tell," Stormy sassed back. I couldn't help but smile.
I looked around and found his father and brother sat in trees while the other was nowhere in sight. The horns from earlier had stopped but no one else had made an appearance so I was going to assume we were on our own with this.
"Get in a good position. He'll be coming through soon. I'll hold back the ones I can," I said, pushing Stormy towards a more foliage filled area. He took off running as I made my way to the epicenter.
As soon as the first portal appeared, I focused my energy. I could feel my body change as I forced my powers to push the other demons down.
The itch in my eyes indicated the switch from black eyes to red. The pull in my hair was my horns growling out and curling upwards. The pierce against my lip was my teeth growing sharper, longer, more deadly.
Each feature changing made it much easier to keep the darkness back. I turned my head quickly when a larger portal appeared but when I saw the swirling red smoke, I focused my energy back on the smaller portals. I closed them as fast as they appeared.
Any portal I couldn't close, Stormy's family took care of. Raums demons were not large. He liked to take the route of smaller and more than using the huge demons and only having one or two.
I tried my best to keep an eye on Stormy but it wasn't easy as he fought alongside his father and Dion. I could see the admiration shining in his father's eyes as he watched his son take down demons with his bowman skills.
A bang sent me to the ground and I lost control of my powers for a detrimental moment. Demons leaked through quickly as I got to my feet.
My gaze met Raums burning eyes. He threw an arm out and sent me to the ground again. As I regained my senses, I noticed colorful spots in the sky. As they got closer, I saw they donned wings and weapons.
A smile creeped onto my face. Backup.
I got to my feet and summoned smoke to wrap around my legs, grounding me. Raum wouldn't knock me down again. I started back on forcing the demons back to the wasteland.
I searched the trees and found Stormy watching me from up in a tree. He had blood on his face and I hoped it didn't belong to him.
I mouthed the words 'do it' and then cast my eyes towards the swirling storm Raum was creating around him. Soon, Stormy wouldn't be able to get a clear shot.
I turned to look at Stormy once again but instead I found my eyes drawn to the gleaming orange end soaring towards its target.
I dropped trying to stop the demons and refocused my powers to hold Raum in place. His eyes turned to flames in his struggle but it was useless.
The arrow met its mark perfectly. Chips fell from the red gem, passed his eyes and dropped onto the dark grass. It seemed to take a moment for everything to catch up but when it did, it was in an explosion.
Raum disappeared in a cloud of bloody smoke. The portals closed all at once and the demons who had yet to be killed, fell dead to the ground, writhing in pain as the power source keeping them in this dimension was sucked away.
The battle was over and we had won.
-----
So I think this battle was better than the one I wrote in book 1 but it might be because you really couldn't see any of the fighting.
