"ashton," maria breathed out, her tears suddenly falling down her cheeks.

"maria," ashton whispered.

"where have you been all this time?" maria asked, opening the door wider (like her vagina) so ashton could step in.

"therapy," ashton shrugged. his voice was deep and raspy, monotone. not like the last time they saw each other, (which was 2 months ago) his voice was much more different. it was quirky and cute, full of laughter and happiness but only a hint of sadness that would eventually fade.

guess it didnt fade this time.

"therapy?"

"yeah," ashton cleared his throat.

"i havent seen you at all,"

"i dont go there anymore - i've transferred." they were still standing by now, right in front of each other. they were incredibly close and maria had the urge to step back. she felt very uncomfortable.

"what the fuck? why?"

"none of your business," ashton snapped, his eyes glaring at her.

"o-okay, sorry." maria swallowed nervously, picking on her finger nails.

"i just wanted to make sure you were doing okay." ashton quietly said, breaking the awkward, frustrating silence.

"ive been... just peachy." maria slightly smiled, patting on the couch for them to both take a seat.

"is that code for 'i hate my fucking life'? or are you seriously just peachy?" ashton asked, his eyes scanning her face trying to find any expression but none was found.

"why do you think im a suicidal kid who stays all night wishing i was dead?" maria narrowed her eyes towards ashton.

"n-no, i d-didn't mean it like that." ashton sent her an apologetic look.

"how have you been?" maria disregarded his apology, still upset at how disrespectful ashton was being.

"ive been ok," ashton turned his head away from her, licking his chapped, dry lips.

"your scars say otherwise," maria pointed towards them, her eyebrows raised.

there were new ones.

many, many new ones.

"dont fucking talk about my scars," ashton scoffs, pulling down his sleeves.

"what is wrong with you?" maria says, feeling a million knives stabbing her into heart.

"nothing," ashton remarks. "why?"

"youve been acting like an asshole," maria shrugs. she was just saying the truth.

"maybe if you didn't leave me for 2 months, then i wouldnt be this way." ashton rolls his eyes. "i mean, come on, maria. i thought we needed each other."

"what the fuck are you talking about?" maria gaped.

"you left me," ashton mumbled. "and i was waiting for you."

"i didnt leave you?" maria muttered, shocked. "you, left... me."

"dont lie to me," ashton glared at her. "you ignored all my messages - you even unfollowed me."

"what the fuck?" maria angrily says. "i never unfollowed you. i even texted you, called you, tried getting to you by DMing Luke... the list goes on."

"i changed my number," ashton slumps his shoulders. the feeling of confusion running through his body.

"i thought you left me," maria whispers, entwining her fingers with ashton's. the feeling of comfort was back, and it felt amazing.

"i guess we were both afraid of losing each other, until we actually did."
