Chapter 3: Superhero's and Ember

After her final class Selene walked home alone. She continued to question herself every step. Why did mom loose her powers? Just what exactly was my dad at school? And why is the cafeteria lunch so freaking awful. In no time she had reached the front yard of her house. She took a deep breath and walked up to the door giving a knock.

A few seconds later her father answered. "Welcome home sweetie!!!" He gave her a big hug. "How was your first day of school?" John looked at her eagerly.

She walked inside and sat on the couch next to her mom. "Umm it was alright." She didn't exactly know what to ask first. She had quite a few questions about the history of the school.

Sera laughed. "Well at least it wasn't bad." She tilted her head slightly. " You look like you have a lot of questions on your mind."

Selene took a deep breath and asked her parents about everything. Asking why her mom lost her powers, why everyone was so fixated on power in school, and also what was it like for them when they attended.

"Woah that's a lot of questions. Let's start with the first one." John looked over at Sera and she gave a heavy sigh.

"Well one day I was on a walk and I was jumped by a bunch of mid-tiers. They snuck up on me injecting me with a syringe and then ran away. When I got back to John's place I collapsed and woke up finding that my powers were gone." She looked down at her hands. "Though it wasn't all bad. It did help me see things from a low-tier point of view. I saw how corrupt the system was. And how I can't always rely on my power. Though I did get it back."

"Thank god for that!" John said from the kitchen.

Selene and Seraphina giggled. "As for your second question, that's mainly just how schools are nowadays. At Wellston it wasn't always like that. One year a man named Rei made it so everyone was treated with respect. But.... that didn't last for long... eventually he became a vigilante and got..." she paused. "He got murdered..."

Her eye's widened. "I-I...." Selene looked away. She didn't know too much about vigilante's only what Seraphina and John had told her back at the boba store.

-Flash back-

"I've heard the word vigilante around the Internet. What exactly does it mean?" Selene asked

John's face darkened slightly. "Well... back when we were in high school there was a book called 'unOrdinary' which had pictured the world where there was one man who used his powers for good. When some people read it they saw the major flaws in society and decided to take action. Though only people who were high-tiers, low-tiers had enough problems as it is. They became self proclaimed superheroes. They would help take out threats that the government deemed unworthy of their time. But of course good deeds in the world don't go unpunished."

John sighed. "There was a group named Ember who was murdering heroes. The government didn't even bat an eye to all the lives lost... Nowadays there hasn't been a superhero since X-Rei. The rest of them had either died or given up. Thankful that also meant Ember had died out too. Though we still don't know if they're still out there or who they work for."

Sera gave a John a pat on the back and his mood changed immediately. "But that's all in the past. Right now we live in the present."

Selene smiled. "Yeah!"

-Present day-

"It's okay honey you didn't know..." Seraphina comforted her.

"Was he killed by Ember...?"

The two of them paused and exchanged looks of concern. "Yes..."

Selene shifted in her seat. This Ember group still hadn't been caught. And they could be killing people still! What if they came for us next?! I-I don't want to die!!!! She curled up in a ball.

Sera gave her a sympathetic smile. "Don't worry. We won't let that happen." She said as if she could read her mind.

"O-Okay."

John smiled at her. "Why don't you go upstairs while we make dinner?"

She nodded and ran to her room. When she got inside she plopped down on her bed. Superhero's....... what if I became one?
