~The First~

I jolt up, suddenly awake and alert, my wolf ears perking up. I take a quick glance around the inside of my make-do shelter. The rotting wooden door barely visible in the night's limited light. The hole in the mountain that the door is wedged against has been my home for the past year, almost. The sounds of fireworks going off in the distance sets something off inside me. Its over! I survived my first extermination!

I grabbed my clothes, putting on the stretchy black pants, Metallica T-shirt and simple black skirt. My lilac fur was silky, as per usual. I put on my only pair of shoes, my big mid thigh black boots. They are all scruffy and falling apart, but I don't care. They still work. That's all that matters. I grab my degrading black denim jacket from the stone 'floor'. Throwing it on as I walk out the 'door'. I walk into the forest were I first woke up in Hell, smiling a little at my ignorance. It's true what they say. Ignorance is bliss. Taking my usual path, I head into town. There are still bodies everywhere. I ignore them. I have to. I wouldn't be able to cope. I turn into a dark alleyway, taking a shortcut to the nearest bar. My ears perk up and lead drops in my stomach.

"Hey there pup," purrs a voice form behind me.

"Leave me alone, dude," I snap, hoping he's one of the more cowardly sinners.

"Names Chase. Where are you off to in such a hurry, princess?" The voice moves and suddenly he's in front of me. I can now see that he's an inch or two taller than me, blue, and appears to be a....Dino? I don't really know how else to describe him. He's got yellow stripes across his arms and he has scars all over him. "You gonna answer me, princess?"

I narrow my eyes, "Don't call me princess."

"I'll call you whatever I want to call you, bitch," he snarls, grabbing onto my arm and waist.

                                             ********

I walk out of the alleyway with shinny new boots, grinning from ear to ear. Chase is still whimpering, and I have to forcibly lower my smile voltage so it's nothing short of polite. I only broke his elbow. And his knee. And now that I think abut it, probably his cooler bone too. But it was self defence! Kinda..

I shake the thought out of my head. Today is a momentous occasion! I shouldn't feel guilty! I pick at the patch of slowly drying blood on my jacket and curse myself. I love this jacket! Goddamn it. Ah well, it'll come out eventually. I walk towards the Rusted Spoon, my favourite bar, and stumble upon a Radio Hack.

"Ya know, cause hotels are for people passing through...temporarily.." Says the girl on the TV's. She has blonde hair and no demon or sinner marks, looking as close to human as you could get. I sigh and walk away, sad that this poor girl is going to get eaten alive by the crowd, most likely. But before I'm completely out of earshot, the girl starts singing.

"What in the nine circles?" I whisper. She is way too innocent to be in Hell. I listen to the lyrics. It's a hotel....that rehabilitates....Sinners...? Something sparks in my chest. Hope? I try to shut it down, but it keeps rising up. My ears prick up as someone steps to watch. I'm only just able to make him out in my side vision. He's very tall, sporting a red pinstriped coat, the colour matching his everything, and a smile that showed delight in suffering, curiosity, everything but kindness and caring. It sent shivers down my spine, but piked my curiosity. As he tilted his head, his shadow danced of it's own accord across the bricked wall behind him. Curiouser and curiouser. I turn my attention back to the TV's and watched as the girl had a fist fight with Katie Killjoy as Tom Trench ran around on fire. I sneak a glance back at the Red Demon, but he's gone.

"Hurph!"

                                           ********

I finally find the Happy Hotel after wondering around for ages. The girl on the TV didn't frigin bother to say WHERE her frigin hotel is!! Annoyed I walk towards the looming structure, butterflies now in my stomach. If this works...... if it sends me to heaven...... I quickly stop that line of thought, absolutely refusing to get any sort of hope. Before I have a change to get in any sort of proximity to the hotel, the red demon from earlier popped out of nothing, knocking on the front doors.

"What in the nine circles?" I whisper for the second time that day. It being my favourite Hell saying, I use it whenever possible. The big door opened to reveal the girl from the TV's! My ears perk up as she slams the door, opening it again, only to slam it closed once more. I cower behind a wall. Could this be some sort of joke? I start to tear up. This was my chance to see him again. There's no way he didn't go to heaven... I've been searching for a way to get to him since my first day. This was my chance.

"THIS WAS MY CHANCE!!" I scream through my tears. I quickly cover my mouth, ears flattening against my head. Trembling I peek out from my hiding place to see the red demon gone. I whimpered again. I haven't felt this alone since before Hell. It could be crippling. It was crippling. Despite my best efforts, a little ray of hope had wormed its way, though unwelcome, into my soul. I sat there, blood on my coat, dirt though my fur, and wet tear streaks down the sides of my face. I wrapped my tail around me trying to offer myself solace.

An explosion caught my attention and I snapped out of my pity party. Rising quickly to my feet, tail twitching, claws out, and ears perked, I saw a flying lump of tin facing the hotel. Standing in front of it was that red demon, again, the girl from the TV, a pink striped spider dude, a little girl with only one eye, a white haired, grey skinned girl with a red cross in place of one of her eyes, and an owl/cat/racoon man with way to big eyebrows and red wings. It appeared that the red demon was talking to the metal egg. Then something popped out from under it, sending big clouds of red dust into your face. I coughed up a lung and through watery eyes -half tears, half dust- saw a portal being open next to me. Lunging out of the way, I snag my jacket on something, silently observed the giant black tentacles that destroyed the flying metal. I stole a glance at the demons on the other side of the portal, but they were already heading inside through the hole in the wall.

"So they let Smiles in...?" I wonder out loud. Then wide eyed repeat, "They let him in? Does that mean, could that mean....?"

Leaving my own unanswered question hanging, I bolted for the Happy Hotel entrance, knocking on the door.
