Chapter 3 - Difficulties

Friday, 7:25 a.m.

"Come on, Mae," my mother whispered to my baby sister, gently rocking her, "you slept awful last night, I'm sure a little rest will do you good." Stroking her cheek, she tilted her head back and exhaled noisily.

Probably there was someone on the phone again, who of course was incredibly important and couldn't wait too long.

"Alright," detaching myself from the doorframe of the nursery, I stepped a little further into the room, "I'll be off then."

"What, why? Where are you going?"

"Uh, to school?"

"To school? Ha, I wish!" Roseanne sourly put the little one back in the crib and turned to me anew, "You don't have classes today, Jaydin!"

"Oh and you know that from where, huh?"

"From your school website! Which, unlike you, I follow daily!" She rubbed her forehead, "Now act like a big girl for once, put your bag down and help me get the little ones done."

"Gladly. Got a few more insults in store." I winked at her provocatively and then left the room for the stairs.

"That's not what I meant, Jaydin! Leave your siblings alone, okay?", I heard my mother call out, but by then I had already stepped onto the first step.

Thursday, 8:30 a.m.

"Wow," Emmi looked enthusiastically at the screen and could hardly take her eyes off the four shining faces, "this is the family you're going to join? They all look like they came out of a modeling magazine! Even the baby!"

"Haha, yeah, kinda," I laughed, then closed the screen dreamily, "but don't they look really sweet? I think I can feel pretty comfortable with them!"

"Oh yeah, I bet!" Emmi nodded appreciatively and then settled down on my bed, "Too bad they don't have a daughter your age, then-"

Oh no.

"Emmi," I interrupted her energetically and rolled my eyes, "can you ever talk about something else? Or just be happy that I ended up with such a lovely family?"

"'Scuse me." Emmi giggled softly and took a deep breath before she got up from the bed again, took my hands and looked deep into my eyes, "Lani Berger, I'm incredibly happy for you and I can't wait for your adventure to start as well. I'll be bombarding you with messages every day and I'm already excited to hear about everything you're going to see. Especially about the neat American girls who-"

"Paper ass!" Laughing out loud, I pushed Emmi back onto the bed and then tossed her off with a pillow.

My best friend really was a hopeless romantic.

"Nah, but all joking aside," Emmi said gasping for air and was now more than serious, "I think you're going to have a wonderful time and the kids look cute as a button! I'm sure they are easy to care for and very grateful for each and every cuddle or gummy bear!"

"I want my blue jacket! The one with the stars! I'm not going to school without that jacket!", Aiden grumbled at me and then grimly settled down on the shoe rack.

Great.

"All right , don't go then!" I gave him a nasty glare and immediately lowered the cap I was actually about to put on him, " My job is only to dress you and I don't give a damn what you do after that, little nag."
