Day one

"Welcome to camp, Swaziland!" The woman in the ugly orange shirt says, her tone way to cheery, "Your cabin is cabin 6E, just past the activity centre and up the hill a little, you can't miss it!" she says pointing. I sigh, I don't even really want to be here at Camp Tarshis, but my parents needed some time away from their psycho kid, also known as me. Swaziland Moire.

"Thanks," I say to the lady and turned away. I hate when adults treat me like I'm six or something, I'm fifteen, there's a nine-year difference.

I lugged my backpack up the hill that leads to my new Cabin. A sign hung above the open door of the cabin. It read:

WELCOME TO 6E, HOME OF THE RAVENS, SISTER CABIN OF 6F, THE POTATO BUGS!

I snorted. Potato bugs? Really? Were they running out of ideas?

'hey, Bob, what do you think we should name this cabin?'

'What about potato bugs?'

'Sounds great!'

I would have loved to hear that conversation.

I walk through the open door. Inside was dimly lit and smelled of popcorn. Bunks were lining one side of the room, on the other side, there were shelves. About five girls were sitting on the bunks. There was a door that led to the bathroom, and a door that leads to the cabin leaders room.

One of the girls jumped down off her bunk and walked up to me, hand out.

"Hi! I'm Greta, welcome to 6E, I hope you enjoy your time here," she says, shaking my hand firmly, smiling.

"Thanks," I answer flatly.

Greta had apple coloured hair and honey brown eyes hidden behind a thick pair of heavy framed glasses. Greta proceeded to introduce me to Darren, Bilic, Samoa, and Ivory. Darren had darker skin, dreads and dark brown eyes. Bilic had black hair streaked with bleach and pale blue eyes. Samoa had curly brown hair and grey eyes, and Ivory was Latino with straight black hair and brown eyes.

"How bout you? What's your name?" Samoa asks, leaning forward.

"Me? Oh, my full name Is Swaziland, but you can just call me Swazi."

"Cool beans," Darren mumbles, looking at something behind me.

I turn to look. A young woman of about twenty was walking toward us, I'm guessing this was our leader. She was tall with blond hair and blue eyes.

"Hey! Ali! This is Swaziland! She's our newest cabin mate!" Samoa yells at her, waving and pointing at me. Ali the cabin leader smiles at me.

"Hi Swaziland, welcome to cabin 6E, I hope you have a great time!"

"Yeah, I guess I'll do my best," I say, distracted by the bell ringing.

"Okay girls! Let's go to the activity centre!" Ali calls to the rest of the crowd.

We made our way to our seats and sat down. The lady in the ugly orange from earlier was standing in the middle of a small stage, talking.

"We'd like to introduce the rest of the cabin leaders! Let's give Ali, Blight, Iritz, Hadly, Gus, Steven, Blake, Jac, Lille, Pearla, Mabel and Bender a big round of applause, then we can sing camp songs till dinner!"

While everyone one began to clap and cheer, I began to space out. Camp songs till dinner.

And I thought this week couldn't get any worse.
