"Tammy was a ball of joy...She would light up a room with just her smile, which was great because it was something I could never do..."
Travis was visibly shaking as he delivered his sister's eulogy. A single tear slowly rolled down his right cheek as he struggled to continue.
"M-my sister would always say... cherish the moments, whether good or bad...b-because you will never know when the next one will be your last-" he choked and turn to face the polished, wooden casket. Everyone was silent, but that silence spoke volume.
"Woah, some speech," Taylor whispered beside me and I glared at her. Sometimes I wondered how we were twins.
Travis stomped out the church, leaving everyone stunned, including me.
"You should go see if he's okay."
I raised an eyebrow at my sister. "You and I both know why it cannot be me," I mumbled back at her.
"You know him better than anyone, Kay. Besides, he needs someone right now."
I wanted to tell her that she was wrong. Ever since Travis and I broke up, we haven't been in touch. I knew nothing about his life for the past year.
Sensing my reluctance, Taylor pushed me towards the exit, where Travis left through, and I sent her a glare.
"Go!" she whispered and I rolled my eyes.
After wondering around for about ten minutes, I spotted his truck and approached it.
Travis was sitting in the driver's seat with his head on the steering wheel. Gathering up all the courage I could muster, I tapped on the passenger side window. When he didn't budge, I opened the door and took a seat next to him. His shoulder rose and fell slowly, releasing small sighs every few seconds.
The last time I was inside Travis' truck, we ended up in various compromising positions...if you get my drift.
"I can feel you staring," he stated, sitting up straight and I blushed, quickly looking away.
"I was just thinking of the last time I was in here."
He turned his head to me. His eyes were red and his lashes clung together from the tears.
"Hey, it's going to be okay." I placed my hand on top of his.
"I can't do this, Kay. This just doesn't feel real."
Squeezing his hand, my mind wondered to the latest picture of us. Could Travis be onto something? Because I was feeling the same nostalgia.
There was only one person that I know with that same bracelet, and we were laying her to rest today.
"Thank you," he whispered. "For being here."
"Don't mention it."
He looked ahead at the setting sun and let out another sigh. People started pouring out of the church, following the men who held the casket.
"I really cannot watch my sister being lowered into the ground." His voiced cracked and my heart ached at the sound.
"I will be there with you no matter what you decide, but I really think this could be the closure you need. You and I know that you would beat yourself up for not saying goodbye one last time," I encouraged.
