"What are you doing?"
"Nothing... I-I couldn't sleep. What about you?" I asked Conrad.
"I couldn't sleep either. Was too busy thinking about how and what we're going to do if or when we go to Leo's garage," was the reply I got.
"You look like you just woke up. Those are not the signs of not sleeping at all."
His sleepy grey eyes lit with amusement. "Maybe I heard this strange person with strange habits roam around downstairs and decided to check on her."
I snickered. "Any ways, I don't plan to fall asleep any time soon. It's already 5:30am. And we also have to go to school sooo...... yeah."
Silence followed as I poured coffee for the both of us. My eyes unconsciously travelled to Conrad, wondering what was going on in his mind as he stared at the ceiling for longer than usual. It always frustrated me because I couldn't see through the thoughts nor could I ever guess. Not that I want to get in but just want to see how everyone's mind works.
"I wonder how you do it?" He whispered in a numb, low tone. "I wonder how it felt for you to, you know, see those things that no one else could see. I mean, I panicked really bad when saw that—that tornado or whatever. And you've seeing such stuff since...... a long time."
"You get used to it," I replied, watching steam rise from my cup of coffee. "You get used to people's stares, them judging you, then telling you that you need help 'cause you're not okay. You just forget to bother about these things after a while."
Another string of silence followed. "We don't need to go to school tomorrow."
My eyes snapped towards him, but his gaze didn't meet mine as he kept staring at the ceiling. "What are you saying?" I had never skipped a day of school. Even the thought never crossed my mind.
"We have to go to Leo's garage, right? It's better to go when Leo isn't home. We could sneak in easily."
I let my mind wander off, trying to figure out the way this could go wrong. "There are too many complications. What if someone finds us or we get caught?"
"I'll just cover up saying that I wanted to talk to him about the project."
When I said quiet afterwards, he insisted, "We need to get why this is happening to you. This isn't normal. This is far beyond it. And the sooner we solve this . . . whatever this is, the sooner you can get to live a normal life: have friends, enjoy your free time, be happy."
I closed my eyes and sighed heavily. "Okay."
֍
"One, two and three."
With the last count, I was pushed up by my feet as I grabbed the window and climbed up. Reaching up, I jumped to the other side. My legs ached from the impact of landing on them as Conrad landed next to me. Grabbing my hand, he hastily shoved his way through the garden.
