“We’re home!” my mom called once we all walked from the foyer to the living room.
Ian hustled down the steps. Elijah was already coming into the room, slowly.
“So what’s for dinner? And where were you guys? I’m starved!” Ian complained, but playfully.
“I was thinking we’d order pizza,” my mom said without any emotion in her voice.
“Pizza?” all four of us questioned to my mother.
My mother was anti-pizza. We had never ordered food, like, ever. She made homemade meals every night, or we went out to eat and listened to her nag about the chef’s food.
“Yes,” my mother answered gracefully while walking out of the room. I looked at dad and he nodded following right after her.
“I can’t believe I’m going to be able to eat something greasy for once,” Ian said jumping up off of the couch and heading back up the stairs to his room. He was so excited, I just knew it.
“How’d the doctor go, Allie?” Elijah asked catching me off guard.
I loved Elijah. He was my big brother, after all. It’s just him and I was never close. We talked, we never fought, we got along, and that’s for sure.
“Oh, uh, I guess it’s the flu,” I muttered hopping up off the couch and going into the kitchen to get something to drink.
“Then why do you look so flushed? I’ve had the flu before, I didn’t look the bad,” Elijah pressed once I opened the refrigerator pulling out the glass picture of iced tea. I ignored his comment about how I looked.
“Because I’m sick,” I admitted just without saying how extreme.
“Oh, sorry. I hope you get well soon,” Elijah said which made me smile. He was always the sweet and considerate one.
He walked out of the kitchen and mom and dad walked in. I poured my drink and sat down at one of the stools placed under the kitchen island.
“So pizza?” I questioned with shock.
“Unless you’d like something else?” my mom asked with genuine worry.
“Oh, that’s plenty okay with me,” I said cheerfully.
“Okay,” she whispered to herself clutching her phone that was in her hand to her chest.
She stared at me and then back at my dad and then started sobbing uncontrollably.
“Don’t!” I yelled.
I couldn’t stand seeing my mom cry. It broke my heart. “I can’t help it,” she sobbed even louder.
“Well help it because I don’t need Elijah or Ian knowing anything!” I said in a hushed tone.
She looked up to me from the kitchen tile and shook her head. “What? I’m not, not telling your brothers!”
I looked to dad for help. I didn’t want them to know. If they knew they’d feel so sorry for me and Ian would tell the entire world.
“Molly, I think Allie’s right, let’s not tell them,” my dad suggested to her. She shook her head fast and sniffled a bit.
“Mom, I’m serious. I don’t want Elijah, Ian or anybody to know. That means just us three. Please, for me?” I pleaded.
“But,” my mom whined as I shook my head.
