New Year's Eve came around the corner like a sneak attack.
Between spending time with Harry and trying to catch up on time with Jess, it took me by surprise when I checked my phone to see December 31, 2019.
"The year's almost over already?" I mumble to myself, frowning.
"What was that, darling?" Harry asks, joining me in the kitchen with perfect timing.
"Oh," I jump slightly, not expecting him to be standing right behind me, "I just can't believe 2019 is almost over."
"Aww, don't be sad about that, love," Harry says, smiling, "2020 will be amazing, I'm sure of it."
"I wouldn't be too sure," I say, sighing heavily, "Jess thinks it's gonna be a shitty year."
"Oh, what does Jess know?" he says, grabbing me by the waist and staring lazily into my eyes.
If you only knew.
"Nothing for sure, I guess," I say, shrugging.
"Exactly." He leans down and places a kiss on my forehead. After doing so, he pulls me against his chest and holds me firmly.
I feel a third presence join the kitchen with Harry and me. I slowly turn my head, half-expecting there to be some scary-ass ghost standing there. But luckily, it was only Jess, watching Harry hold me with a total look of admiration in her eyes.
"Kiss in the kitchen like it's a dance floor," she sings, twirling around in a circle.
"Jess," I groan, pulling away from Harry's embrace, "do you always have to do that?"
"I don't have to," she shrugs, walking past us, "but boy, do I enjoy it."
"You're unbelievable," I say, shaking my head. A dry feeling soon enough filled my mouth, so I made my way over to the cabinet to grab a cup. I opened the fridge to find something to drown the desert in my mouth.
"Oh, by the way, guys," Jess says excitedly, drumming her hands on the countertop, "we're having a little New Year's get together tonight."
"Oh God," I groan, closing the refrigerator. "When you say 'little,' are you meaning my definition of little or yours?"
"Mine," she says quickly, sounding like a cough, "but that's beside the point. The point is, I need to know what kinds of foods you two are going to want for tonight. Oh, and drinks! Can't forget the booze."
"Jess, exactly how many people are coming over tonight?" I ask, resting my elbows on the counter and closing my eyes.
"I don't know, like 10?" She guesses, pursing her lisp together and shrugging. "That's how many I invited anyway."
"Exactly. That's how many people you invited. Who knows how many people will actually show up?"
"Oh, will you just relax?" She rolls her eyes. "There isn't going to be a house full or anything. Just a few people."
I turn to Harry, who just stood there, watching Jess and I bicker back and forth. He shrugs, obviously not sure of what to do or say.
"There better not be," I warn.
"Jordan's coming," she says, attempting to lighten the mood. I stare at her blankly.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Harry's body stiffen slightly before he shifted in his seat.
"That doesn't make things better."
"What, I thought it could be fun!! I invited her just for you!"
