Chapter 20- A Lonely Swing Set

Dans P.O.V

The windows were open, letting the cool night air vent itself through the car. The original plan was to head back to the flat, except it was such a nice night, I thought to take a quick drive, and maybe sit in the park for a bit. And that's exactly what I did. I pulled over the car into the empty parking lot of the park. I sat there for a moment, a slight smile on my face, and then escaped into the night. It was dark, I could barely see in front of me. I heard the leaves crunch under my shoes as I made my way onto the abandoned swing set. The ground quickly changed to mulch as I took a much needed seat down on the swing. I went slowly back and forth listening to to the low creak of the rusty chains above me. It's lonely, but I like it. As I looked at the slides and the jungle gym, I remembered all the times I came here as a kid when visiting my grandparents. The now dried up lake was were I used to feed the ducks. " Now Daniel, I snuck in some bread for you to feed the ducks!" I remembered my grandmother saying. "But don't feed the ugly one! He's got a nasty bite that he likes to use on little boys like you!" My Grandfather would always follow with his words of caution. I would always smile from ear to ear, running straight down to the lake with the bread just for me. The ducks would swarm at me, and all they wanted was some bread. Never once did I feed those ducks. I would always make sure I was out of sight of my grandparents, and then call for my Kitty. Don't be mistaken, Kitty wasn't a cat, but the she was the, "ugly one". She would waddle out of her hollowed out tree, waiting for me to come. It wasn't until she was in the sun that you could see the scars from other kids throwing rocks at her and plucking her feathers when she wasn't looking. She was always alone. I ripped the bread, small enough so she could eat it as I called her to me by patting the ground and making kissing noises. She was always hungry, you could see her ribs, but even then, she would take the bread from my hand slowly and swallow one at a time. Both my grandparents left to a retirement home somewhere in north England when I was 10 meaning, I had no reason to come back to the park until I was older and moved here from Manchester. Years after, I knew that Kitty was waiting for me. Yet, I left her alone, abandoned, just like everyone else had. I forgot about Kitty for years, so even the last person to actually remember her, left her. This was my safe haven, and still, sitting here i'm filled with regret.
I heard a scream. I jumped off the swing and ran the direction the scream came from, abandoning my past once again.
Once I finally got to the alley I heard the scream from, I also heard a familiar voice.
" Hey, got off of her!" I heard the familiar voice echo off the walls. I peaked around the corner, making sure to stay hidden in the shadows. There were about five guys surrounding a young woman, and the other guy was going towards the group. He really thinks he could take on the whole group? Could he?
"Hey man, are you trying to interrupt us?" One of the gang members said with a heavy northern accent.
" Let her go! " he yelled back, trying to get to the woman.
"Hey!" The guy pinned the man up against the brick wall with one arm and looked him straight in the eyes.
" Are you gonna answer my question, or are you gonna keep being a pain in the arse?" I could barely hear them now, the gang member was talking through his teeth.
"Me an arse? You-" I held my breath as the gang member held the man up by only his neck, choking him.
" You want us to let her go? Fine. There's your dying wish." He gestured to his mates and they let the woman go. She walked towards me, not looking as she bumped into me, obviously traumatized from her encounter with near death just a minute ago, and getting out alive. Right before she ran off, she looked me straight in the eyes.
" I'm so sorry." Her sincere words echoed in my ears. Sorry for what? I wanted to ask, but by then she was well down the pavement. I looked back around the corner and they were beating him, kicking him. I couldn't help but thinking that this entire time, I should've done something. I wonder if anything would of helped. I couldn't of tried to fight them, but if I did, at least that would counted for something. He vomited and laid curled up on the ground holding his stomach. I guess they decided it was enough, because they ran out of the alley way laughing. I made sure that I was still well hidden in the shadows. I knew what I had to do. I looked at the man curled up on the ground one more time before running to get my car. I didn't help then, so I had to help now. I drove it into the alleyway, the headlights beaming towards the man. Only now did I see his face. "Oh god. No, no, no, no!" I let my eyes be blurred with a layer of shine. I dropped to my knees next to my friend. Pj Liguori. Hardly recognizable, he was covered in blood and bruises already beginning to turn different shades of yellows and purples. I lifted him up and put him in the back seat best I could. Where do I go? I can't go back to my flat, Phil would ask to many questions. I rounded the corner I realized the closest flat I could go to was Kat's flat. I hate to let Kat see Pj like this, but it's the only way. I sighed with a broken stutter of sadness in between. I pulled into the parking lot quickly and carried Pj up the three flights of stairs. Only after did I wonder how I was able to carry him up all those stairs, but I didn't matter now anyways. Right before I backed my car out, the words echoed in my ears over and over.
I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
