The Midnight Game

12, 11, 10, 9...

To wait for a sign, for the night to align

For a game of midnight hide-and-seek,

perhaps it seemed too real.

A simple game;

The players hid and the seeker searched;

while they ran players' stomachs lurched;

when they were finally found.

8, 7, 6, 5...

Players all happy to be alive,

for the millenium lights to arrive;

and so patience was required--

As time was slowly ticking for a wait to be waited.

Darkness pressed down a heavy lead,

to anyone's cries to be heard and said,

so they could be disqualified.

4, 3, 2, 1...

A stretch of road and a game for fun

The work of a century had been done;

For all the standing, untaken pawns,

came closer to an ending, so they could have a break.

"Don't give up,"

a phrase that fed players cup by cup,

at long last started to fade.

0...ready or not, here I come...

as the time remaining had been some;

for a tree to bear its ripe, red plum--

and all lives scraped to a stand-still.

The moment so waited for would arrive soon;

towards the face of an apprehensive moon,

as darkness began to collect.
