Chapter Seven
On Vice's third day spending time with the Tatlonghari, he was starting to warm up to them. Karylle and him were getting more comfortable with each other that being sweet together and holding hands became so natural for them. Their fingers would intertwine while walking down the stairs to have breakfast with her family. Karylle would unconsciously wrap her hand around Vice's arm while walking in public (with the family of course). Vice would give a dimpled-smile that did things to Karylle's stomach. They could say that they pretty mastered faking to be a couple. The late night talks, getting to know each other really helped them to be more comfortable with each other. They were no longer strangers.
Since it was their last day staying with the Tatlonghari, the family decided to have dinner at their favorite steak house. Now everything was going smooth and great, until something happened that both of our characters weren't expecting.
"Vice?"
Vice swallowed hard, turning to the voice which he regretted because he could have just pretended that he didn't hear anything but he already did. His eyes widened they could pop. He quickly made a face in hopes that the man would get the message he was trying to convey.
"Uy, Vice! Kamusta na?" the man continued to ask, clearly he didn't understand the faces Vice was making.
"I'm sorry, but I think you've mistaken me for someone else." His brows raised to his hairline, lips pointed to the side while his head tilted on the side as well in hopes that his friend would get it this time but it turned out, he was as slow as a snail.
"Anong pinagsasabi mo? Okay ka lang ba?" He chuckled. "Lalakeng lalake pormahan natin ngayon brad ah!"
Vice and Karylle's eyes widened that their eyeballs could pop out while her family stared in complete bewilderment.
"Lalake naman talaga ako." Vice defended in a deep and low voice. Now it was the man's turn to look at him with wrinkled brows.
"Wala ka bang gig ngayon?" he continued to ask, just making the situation worse.
"Anong gig?" Mrs. Z finally spoke. Rush of panic crawled up his spine as he began to think of an excuse.
"Ah, may banda po kasi ako Tita. Ako yung... lead vocalist!"
"Bakit ka nya tinawag na Vice?" It was Mr. Modesto's turn to ask. Vice tried to keep a normal face though deep inside he was internally screaming and wishing he could just teleport back home.
"Ano po kasi, Sir..." he stuttered. "Vice captain ako ng basketball team dati. Oo, tama. At teammate ko po 'to si Vhong. Diba, brad?" Vice awkwardly chest-bumped the man who was now confused as ever.
"Saglit lang po ah." Vice excused himself, asking the man to follow him until they were earshot away.
"Anong nangyayari sayo, brad? Sino yung mga kasama mo?"
"Long story short, hindi nila ako kilala bilang Vice except yung babae na katabi ko kanina."
And he summarized his explanation in less than two minutes, leaving his friend discombobulated. When they returned back, his friend told them to have a great meal then bid his goodbye. Vice sighed in relief, thanking the heavens for coming up with excuses right away and it seemed that they all bought it.
"Uy, Dom. Okay ka lang ba? Pinagpapawisan ka." Zia noticed the sweat forming on his forehead.
He was sweaty from all the excuses he made on the spot. He couldn't remember the last time he felt this stress. Karylle immediately wiped his forehead with her handkerchief.
