TW: Bullying and lowkey manipulation?
Reader POV
"Hey, Avery, are you free later?" I asked my friend nervously at the end of first period. Recently, Avery hadn't been as nice to me as she usually was. It made me nervous around her because I never knew what would set her off.
The other day, she nearly yelled at me because I'd made a joke about how messed up her hair had gotten when she was hit with a disarming spell. I thought that it wasn't a big deal, but she'd thought differently.
She was my only friend left, though, because somehow she'd embarrassed me in front of so many people that she was the only one who'd still hang out with me. But that was okay, because I wasn't alone—I still had her.
Today, I was feeling particularly down and I needed someone around to talk with. I was anxious that she'd decline to hang out with me and make a snide comment. But Avery wouldn't embarrass me with so many people around, would she?
Summoning my courage, I finally asked if she was busy later. I stood before her, anxiously awaiting her response. Unfortunately for me, she curled her lip in disgust.
"Yes, actually, Draco and I are going on a date by the lake after dinner." She said, disgust evident in her tone. Thankfully, she hadn't been too loud, so not many people heard. Quite frankly, it hurt me that she was dating Draco. She knew that I liked him, but just didn't seem to care.
"Oh, sorry. Never mind, then." I mumbled, turning away from her. Luckily, we were dismissed then and I was spared the embarrassment of having her and her group of other friends stare and laugh at me.
Draco POV
I wasn't sure what had gotten into Avery lately, but she'd been acting really mean to everyone, especially (Y/N). I planned to talk to her after class and break up with her. I couldn't stand to be with her when she was like this any longer.
I felt white hot fury at the way she spoke to (Y/N) this morning. I couldn't pinpoint why, but I had to clench my fist to stop myself from going over there and telling Avery off right there. She can't treat people that way, especially not sweet, caring people like (Y/N).
**TIME SKIP TO THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY**
Reader POV
"What do you mean, Draco? Why? What did I do?" Avery asked in an agonized tone from somewhere down the hallway.
"You're mean, Avery! To everyone around you! I just can't stand it anymore!" Draco shouted back. I pushed through the slow-forming crowd to see Avery crying, trying to pull Draco back as he walked away.
"Please, Draco, I'm sorry! I-I didn't mean any of it..." She bawled as Draco tried to rip his arm away.
"No! I've put up with it for too long! I'm done!" Draco shouted, finally breaking her grip and storming off towards a group of his Slytherin friends. Avery started to break down, sobbing awfully in the middle of the hall.
I knew somewhere within me that it was a stupid idea, but I rushed to her side anyways. She would probably be too upset to think straight, and it probably wouldn't end well for me or her, but I couldn't help it; my friend was in pain, what else could I do? I wrapped my arms around her shoulders and shooed away the crowd.
