His dark brown eyes stared at the pale envelope that resided in his callused hand, his thumb slowly stroking the letter until the sharp edge of the paper cut his thumb. In pain, he immediately held his thumb to the envelope, staining it red.
Javier received the letter earlier that morning, but he had been staring at it since he found it in his mailbox. He spent the last hour sitting on his porch with the unopened letter in his left hand.
That morning it was raining, the sound of rain hitting the tarmac filled his ears. As calming as that morning was, that damn letter filled him with such anxiety.
Seeing that damned name on the top left corner of that envelope filled his body with pure nervousness. It had been a year now; a year since he and his girlfriend, the woman he believed to be his soulmate, split up. After finally getting over her, she found her way back into her heart, like she always did.
After what felt like forever, Javier finally stood up, his damp moccasins hitting the soaked wood. He opened the pale wooden door, the wind shutting it with a slam.
"Shhh! Mariana is asleep." his brother shushed him.
"Sorry, it was the wind." Javier held the envelope behind his back, clutching it tightly.
"What do you have behind your back?"
"A letter." Javier brought his left hand out to reveal the letter he grasped. "It's from (Y/N)."
"Shit," David stood up and walked over to Javier, towering over him. "Are you going to open it?"
"What? Hell no."
"Why not?"
"Did you forget what even happened?" Javier shoved past his taller brother and sat down on the couch, placing his head in his hands.
"Aren't you just a little bit curious?" the taller of the two made his way to the loveseat that sat across from the couch, a dark brown coffee table with scattered papers separating the two.
"What could she possibly want to say to me that would make all of this better?" he lifted his head, the letter sat in between his head and his left palm.
"Get your head out of your ass," David groaned. "It's probably an apology."
Javier's head recoiled in shock and anger. "She had so many chances to apologize for what the hell she did, why is she choosing now? When I've moved on?"
"She probably realized what an amazing man she truly lost." David's answer was full of sarcasm.
"You know, I think I'm gonna talk to Kate about this instead." the muscular man stood up, the letter wrinkling in his grasp. As he walked off to David and Kate's room, he heard his older brother blow air out of his mouth.
Soon, he made it to his destination. With a knock, Kate quickly answered the door. Her dark brown hair loosely pulled into a braid that sat along her shoulder. "Hey!" her smile was bright, it always made Javier feel better.
"I hate to do this to you again, but I need some advice." with a swift movement, Javier lifted the envelope that was trapped between his pointer and middle finger.
"Oh, geez. Come in." Kate opened the door fully and hurried him in, quickly pulling up a chair to face the bed Javier sat on.
The wrinkled letter sat on the bedside table, and he couldn't keep his eyes off of it.
"So..." Kate grabbed his attention when she finally sat down, her almond skin shining in the yellow-hued lightbulb that was in the lamp. "What's going on, Javi?"
