Suddenly a quiet groan was made. Tobin and Christen looked up to see Mallory finally starting to come to. As she slowly opened her eyes she was met with confusion.
"Mal" Christen spoke to bring her out of her daze. She wasn't met with a reply. Christen decided that she needed to crawl to the back seat and help Mal. She was still hanging upside down but she knew it was a dangerous idea to move her. She had no clue if she injured her spine or not.
"Mal, we can't move you at all but help is on the way" Tobin said as she pushed back the hair on Mal's face that was sticky with blood. She finally seemed to be coming to.
"Chris, what happened" Mal asked, still dazed and confused.
"We were on the way to dinner and a car hit us. We flipped into the ditch" Tobin explained.
"Are you guys okay? Wait- where's Dansby?" Mal asked as a panic spread across her face. Christen did her best to block the view of his injured body. Mal didn't need to see that. The look on Christen's face said it all, she didn't even have to tell Mal.
"No, no this isn't happening" was all Mal said before she broke down into sobs. Agonizing minutes of Mal's sobbing felt like hours. Christen pulled her head close, while keeping her still as possible. Christen and Tobin did their best to comfort her until help arrived.
Minutes later, when the fire trucks, ambulance, and police officers arrived, Mal's sobs had turned her into a dazed zombie. She seemed so out of it. They still didn't know if she was hurt or not but they knew she probably wouldn't answer.
The firefighters were able to pry open the drivers door where Christen originally sat. Tobin crawled out first. Tobin and the firefighters agreed that they would take Dansby out next so Christen could remain with Mal and keep her calm. However, opening his door would prove to be a lot difficult.
Minutes later the sounds of blades could be heard sawing through the door. Christen did her best to cover Mal's ears and keep eye contact with her so she didn't panic.
10 minutes later, the door was taken off and Dansby's body was slowly pulled out. Tobin thought she was going to puke as she watched the pull him into a body bag after confirming he had no pulse. She had been refused medical treatment until they got Mal out. After his body was taken out they told Christen she needed to crawl out his door through the top.
"Mal, look at me. I need to get out so they can treat you and get you out of here too. But Tobin and I are going to be waiting. We aren't going anywhere, I promise you that. I love you, okay?" Christen told the younger girl. Mal slowly nodded her head in confirmation. She was feeling a lot of things right now, heartbroken, shocked, in pain, but terrified was at the top of that list. Christen then slowly crawled out of the top of the car and was assisted by the firefighters. She jumped into Tobin's arms and let out a sob. Tobin stood there with her arms around her trying to soothe her girlfriend.
"Hey, I just got off the phone with Kel. She's going to meet us at the hospital, okay?" Tobin said. Christen nodded her head. They turned and watched as an EMT crawled into the car with Mal. They listened to the conversation unfold.
"Do you have any pain anywhere?" The EMT asked.
"My shoulder area" they heard Mal respond. After a few seconds they heard the EMT tell her coworkers that she thinks Mal broke her collar bone and that she had a gash on the back of her head. Then they heard the words they never wanted to hear.
"I can't feel my legs" Mal said in a panicked tone.
