"Don't touch that!"
"Stay away from there!"
"Be careful!!"
"Stay back!"
"Don't touch anything!"
These were only some of the few things Varian shouted at you while you roamed around his lab. It always irritated you immensely. You knew his lab was full of dangerous chemicals but you were careful. At least you were most of the time.
You never saw what the big deal was, but Varian always seemed to freak out when you got close or tried to touch one of his inventions. You felt like he was constantly overreacting, but you never said anything about it.
You sighed as you watched your boyfriend tighten a loose screw on one of his new machines while you sat against the wall behind him. He didn't turn around so you sighed again, a little louder this time. Still no reaction. You huffed as you stood up and made your way over to his desk.
"Variaaaan," you said while waving a hand in front of his face. He looked up at you with his eyebrows furrowed.
"What are you working on?" You asked curiously as you leaned forward, resting your chin in your hand.
"It's a paint mixing machine for Rapunzel! She pours the paints in here and secures the lid, then she pushes on this pedal and it spins!" He explained, excitement lighting up his features.
"Woah, so she won't have to mix the colours by hand?" You questioned.
He nodded in return. "It's especially useful if she wants to make a large amount of a certain colour."
"That's really cool," you mumbled while reaching out to touch the pedal of the machine, but immediately drew your hand back when Varian smacked it away.
"Gah- No! Don't touch it, (Y/n)!" he cried out.
"Why not?"
"Because you don't know what you're doing and you might hurt yourself!"
You rolled your eyes and stood up.
"Well when will you be done so we can hang out? I'm soooo bored," you whined, getting frustrated. Varian had been working on the machine for the past hour and you were getting tired of waiting.
"Uh, soon...maybe?"
"Maybe I can help?" You offered with a smile. "That way, you can be finished faster and then we can spend time together!"
Your expression fell when he shook his head and gently placed a hand on your shoulder to push you away.
"Uh, yeah, I don't think that's the best idea. Sorry, (Y/n). Why don't you go home and I'll come by later," he offered, still guiding you towards the door.
"Yeah.....okay," You said, then left the house quickly so he wouldn't see the tears pooling in your eyes. You ran home and cried, feeling upset that he chose his invention over spending time with you again. You felt like you never got to see him anymore because he was always busy in his lab. Even if you were there, he didn't talk to you very much because he was too focused on whatever else he was working on. You stayed in your bedroom cried out all your emotions.
A few hours later, there was a knock at your door. You winced when you heard your mother open the door and Varian's voice asking if you were home. Your heartbeat quickened as you heard his familiar footsteps ascend up the stairs and stop in front of your bedroom door. You sat up on your bed when he knocked on the door.
"Come in," you mumbled.
Varian swung open the door and walked in with a big grin on his face.
"Hi, sweetheart!" He chirped, but frowned when you didn't respond.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
You stared at your hands in your lap and fumbled with your fingers, still staying silent. Varian sat on your bed and scooted until he was right in front of you.
"(Y/n), look at me, please," he spoke, voice laced with worry as he reached up to caress your face in his gloved hands.
"No, no, it's nothing," you gently pushed him away before climbing into your bed and hiding under the blankets so he wouldn't see your glassy eyes.
"(Y/n)! (Y/n), please tell me what's wrong," he begged, growing more concerned with each passing second. You fought back the tears and kept the blanket over your head, even when he tried to pry it off of you.
"...Please," Varian begged one more time, voice cracking with sadness. You finally gave in and sat up. He let out a small gasp when you put down the blanket to reveal the tears rolling freely down your face. He wanted so badly to wipe them away and kiss you until you were smiling and happy again. He hated seeing you cry, especially when he didn't know the cause of your distress.
"I-it's just... I feel like you never want to spend time with me anymore," you admitted, looking at your boyfriend anxiously. He looked distraught. The fear in his eyes was unbearable. He quickly grabbed your hands and held them tightly in his own.
"Why would you think that?" He asked softly, voice shaky and hesitant.
"Well, b-because you're always so busy with your new experiments and inventions. And I know that's your hobby, and I think it's so inspiring that you're always doing what you're so passionate about...but-" you bit your lip, nervous to continue. Varian squeezed your hands, silently urging you to continue. You sighed.
"But, I just feel like whenever you're busy in your lab, you tend to push me away. I want to spend time with you and help you but you won't even let me go near anything."
"That's what's upsetting you?"
You nodded and turned your head away. Your eyes grew wide when Varian suddenly grabbed you and pulled you into a bone crushing hug. Your heart skipped a beat when you felt him plant a kiss to the top of your head before nuzzling his cheek in your hair while he squeezed you tight.
"Sweetheart, I only do that to protect you," he spoke into your hair, letting you go before continuing. "Sometimes, my experiments can go wrong, and sometimes they get out of control. After....what happened with my dad," he sighed and you placed your hand over his for support. He smiled at you for a second before his expression changed back to one of despair as the traumatic memory played again in his mind.
"After that, I've never stopped worrying that it's gonna happen again. I'm so scared that one day, I'm gonna hurt someone else that I love." He reached up to cup your cheek as he gazed deeply into your eyes. "And I would never forgive myself if anything were to happen to you, (Y/n)."
Your breath hitched at his words and you smiled in relief.
"You really care about me that much?"
Varian moved his hand and grabbed your chin instead.
"Of course I do," he murmured while leaning in. He captured your lips in a sweet, loving kiss. Your cheeks reddened at the action, but you enjoyed every second of it.
"I love you," you said breathlessly, meaning every word.
"I love you too," Varian whispered, pulling you in again and kissing you once more. It was short and sweet, but it meant everything to you both. He wrapped his arms around you and held you in a loving embrace, which you returned greatly. You hummed in content and enjoyed the happy feeling that bubbled up in your chest.
"(Y/n)?"
"Yes?"
"Please never, ever feel like I want to push you away again. I'm never letting you go." He kissed your temple, causing a grin to spread across your lips.
"I'm far too in love with you," he sighed dreamily.
You giggled and buried your face in his neck.
"That's good, cause I'm too in love with you to let you push me away."
"I'll never push you away."
He placed a hand on the back of your head to stroke your soft, silky hair.
"Never again."
