I drag my fingers along the spines of books as I read each title, searching for something related to my cause. I hurriedly choose a select few books about lycanthropy and some ancient folktales. I knew that with my luck, someone I know would walk in and want to know what I'm doing with books about werewolves.
I go to turn into the next aisle of books but hit something and topple back onto my butt. A heart beat quickened. A heart beat? I furrow my eyebrows and look up to see Isaac toppled over too. I can hear his heartbeat.
"Hey, Kasey, sorry about that," he chuckles and pushes himself to stand. He offers me his hand and I take it.
"Thanks," I say and turn away from him to pick up my books. I set my backpack on one of the tables and slip the books inside. I sling the bag back over my shoulder and get ready to leave, but Isaac stops me.
"Hey Kasey," he says. I look back at him as he shuffles around in his backpack, leaning against the table. He glances back at me and says, "Sometimes the people around you are a better source of information."
He glances at my back pack. He saw what I tried to hide. I only stare at him for a moment before taking off again. Why did he say that? Does he know something I don't? Does he know about whatever the hell I am?
Walking down the hallway, I can feel and hear my heart beating out of my chest. The panic slowly built up. I didn't know what was going on with me, and everyone and everything was getting stranger and stranger.
I dodge people in the hallway while keeping a sharp eye out for my sister. With no luck spotting her, I dip into the girls bathroom to catch my breath where I'm not surrounded by people.
I lean against one of the sinks and hang my head, inhaling deeply. I open my eyes after I realized what was beginning to happen. In the mirror, my eyes shone the gold color it had before, only my face stayed the same this time. I stare back at myself for just a moment before I realized a girl had stepped out of one of the stalls, and was staring at me in the mirror too. I quickly dip my head down and shut my eyes.
I recognize the girl that had seen my eyes. I see her around Lydia Martin and that douchebag Jackson all the time, and even around Scott too. She was small and had a kind face, and her hair reminded me of Gemma's but darker.
"Are you okay?" She asks me sincerely and takes a few steps closer.
"I'm fine," I say and check my eyes in the reflection of the mirror. Back to normal.
"Are you..." she begins, and I meet her eyes in the mirror. "Are you a werewolf?"
Her question baffles me. I lick my lips before asking a question in return, "Why do you ask that?"
"I know some people," she says vaguely. "I'm Allison."
"Kasey," I say and drop my backpack back over my shoulder.
"Do you know Scott McCall?" She wonders while washing her hands.
"Yeah, why?"
"You should talk to him. He can help you with that," Allison tells me, referencing to my eyes. Scott?
I nod, and glance back at her, "Thanks."
I hurry out of the bathroom before anything else was thrown out into the open. What would Scott know? Does he... has he had the same issues I have?
In gym class, some group of morons had been goofing off enough to annoy Finstock, so the whole class had to do laps. I jog at a steady pace by myself, glancing at Scott every now and then. I wondered if I should say something, or if I should just keep it to myself. Come to find out, I wouldn't have to say anything. I'm pretty sure Allison already did.
Scott slowed to my speed, and jogged along side me, "Hey!"
"Hi," I reply, and keep my eyes ahead of me.
"Uh, Allison told me what she saw," he starts.
"Of course she did," I whisper to myself, and I think Scott heard it.
"I can help you," I feel him glance at me, but I keep my eyes straight forward. "You and I aren't that different."
I furrow my eyebrows, and slow down to a walking pace so I could look at him. He does the same, except he glances around at our classmates, and then back at me. His eyes glowed red.
"I've seen that before," I catch myself saying. "Your eyes look just like the ones I saw the night of my crash... what are you?"
My heart was pumping now, pushing the fear through me. Scott stops when I do, and he says lowly to me, "I'm a werewolf, like you."
They do exist. I wince at his statement, and blink away the disbelief.
"I- I don't know what to do," I almost say in a whisper.
"I can help you. There are others like us, and I'm sure they'll help you too," Scott assures me and the coach tells at us to keep running. I go back to jogging along side Scott.
"There's more like us?" I ask quietly.
"Isaac is like us, and there's a couple more too. Plus, I think I know who bit you," he did not look happy.
"Who? I don't remember being bit. I passed out before whatever it was got to me before the crash. I woke up and there were no marks anywhere," I inform him.
"I'm guessing that he probably bit you when you were out. And obviously, you survived the bite so your injuries probably healed pretty quickly," Scott explains.
"Healed?"
"Our healing is very rapid."
Scott's claws came out, and I gaped. He sliced a spot on his hand, and I watch it seal itself only seconds after.
"This can't be real," I groan. I really am a beast, and one that I thought was only fictional. Scott gives me a minute to absorb the information.
After a long pause of our shoes scraping the track, Scott says, "Your first full moon is going to be rough."
I give him a questioning look, and let him go on to explain. "It takes time to learn control when you first turn. On everyone's first full moon, well, it's like the rage just fills you and it takes over. We had to lock up Isaac and a couple others so they wouldn't hurt anybody, and it definitely got messy."
"Who's we? Will I have to be locked up?"
"Yeah, you will. I'll be there to help you get through it," Scott tells me as Stiles catches up to us. He doesn't mind him though, and goes on to tell me the who part.
"We know some other werewolves. The two Isaac was turned with, and then there's Derek, and Peter," Scott became a little cold with the last name.
"Scott what are you doing?" Stiles gives him a manic look.
"She knows now," Scott says to him.
"So uh- you're a werewolf too then?" He glances at me, but quickly looks away.
"I guess so," I mumble. I didn't want to be.
"Kasey, what are you doing after school?" Scott asks me.
"Nothing," I shake my head. Like always, my school work was already done, so I just had a bunch of siblings to come home to. I think Louie would be working late tonight though.
"You should come with us to Derek's place. He'll be able to help out a lot," he informs me. I nod slowly.
"Are we going to confirm our theory too?" Stiles looks over at Scott from my other side.
"Almost undoubtedly," he responds and purses his lips. I shrug it off. I'll learn all I need to know tonight and I'll be done with it. Hopefully.
