Lily, Hugo and Poppy spoke for hours. Learning more about each other brought the three children closer.
"So you had never heard of the wizarding world before getting your letter?" Hugo asked his new friend inquisitively. "No, and I was afraid of it affecting my experience at Hogwarts, so I did a little bit of reading," said Poppy. "Well, well, well, and who might we have here?" a snarky voice said. Lily and the rest turned their heads to face the voice, only to be met with the faces of three girls. The girl who stood before her 'friends' had short black hair which framed her long pale face, her blue eyes scrutinized the three children. "And who might you be?" Hugo asked as he looked at the three girls curiously . " Parkinson, Melissa Parkinson, and these two are Slewyn and Blackwood" Melissa said as she pointed to the girl with blonde hair and brown eyes first and proceeded to point to the girl who had brown hair and blue eyes.
"You must be a Weasley" she said as she looked at Hugo with disgust. "And you must be Lily Potter" Melissa said as she looked at Lily, who was getting annoyed. "Why don't you join us rather than these two-" she was stopped by a now angry Lily. "I can choose who is worthy of my friendship on my own" Lily said as she looked at the hand Melissa had offered with disgust. "Oh you will regret that Potter" Melissa said as she told her 'friends' to get out of her way. "Bring it on Parkinson" Lily said as she closed the compartment door. "We should change into our robes," Poppy said aloud after a few minutes of tense silence.
The three children took off their jackets and pulled on their long black robes. A voice echoed in the train: "We will be reaching Hogwarts in five minutes' time. Please leave your luggage on the train, it will be taken to the school separately." Lily looked at Hugo nervously, who looked like he was about to faint.
The train slowed down and finally stopped. People pushed their way towards the door and out onto a tiny, dark platform. As the children shivered in the cold night a lamp came bobbing over the heads of the students. A voice, familiar to Hugo and Lily was heard."Firs' years! firs' years over here! Lily! Hugo come yer'!" Hagrid's big hairy face grinned over the sea of heads.
Tiny boats carried them to a kind of underground harbour, underneath the castle, where they clambered out on to rocks and pebbles. The first years walked up a flight of stone stairs and crowded around a huge oak door. Hagrid raised his gigantic fist and knocked three times on the castle door.
The door swung open at once and revealed a rather familiar face. A tall, brown-haired wizard stood before them in mustard coloured robes with a small smile on his face, reminiscing the time when he stood where they were with a toad in his hand. "The firs' years, Professor Longbottom" said Hagrid. "Thank you Hagrid, I will take them from here." He pulled the doors open wide, only to reveal a large entrance hall, the stone walls were lit with flaming torches and the ceiling was too high to make out.
"Welcome to Hogwarts" said Professor Longbottom. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because while you're here, your house will be like your family. There are four houses , known as Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, you triumphs will earn you house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup which is a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours. Now form a line and follow me, the Sorting Ceremony is about to start." Professor Longbottom said as he opened the doors to the Great Hall.
Professor Longbottom silently placed a four legged stool before the first years. On top of the stool, he placed a pointed, patched, frayed and extremely dirty wizards hat. Everyone in the Hall was staring at the hat as it twitched. A rip near the brim opened wide, and the hat began to sing-
"Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all........
Lily got lost in her own thoughts. She wondered which house she would be sorted into. Although Albus had gotten sorted in Slytherin, she wasn't very interested in the house. Teddy had gotten into Hufflepuff and had told her that it was the best house in Hogwarts, but she just couldn't see it. Loud applause brought Lily back into the real world as it broke her train of thought.
Professor Longbottom, or Hugo and Lily's Uncle Neville, stepped forward holding a long roll of parchment. "When I call out your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted," he said. "Abbey, Justin" A boy with brown hair walked nervously towards the stool and put on the hat, which fell right down over his eyes before sitting down. "RAVENCLAW!" The hat exclaimed after a moments silence. The table second from the left cheered, clapped. A few Ravenclaws shook his hand as Justin sat down at the Ravenclaw table.
"Blackwood, Olivia". "RAVENCLAW!" The hat exclaimed again.
"Blakely, Althea". "HUFFLEPUFF!" The table on the right cheered and clapped as Althea took a seat at the Hufflepuff table. "Blakely, Atherton". "GRYFFINDOR!" The table on the far left exploded with cheers. Hugo and Lily could see their siblings cheering the first years on. "Langston, Poppy" she quickly got up and sat on the stool before placing the hat on her head. "GRYFFINDOR" the hat exclaimed. "Parkinson, Melissa" Melissa sassed her way to the stool and placed the hat onto her head. "SLYTHERIN!" exclaimed the hat.
"Potter, Lily"
