"Potter, Lily"
Everyone's head turned to look at the youngest Potter. Lily took a deep breath before walking towards the stool. As she sat down the hat was placed on her head, covering her eyes. "Hm, interesting, you have various qualities within you, Slytherin would bring you greatness," the hat said to her. Lily tried not to influence the hat's opinion, but she couldn't help herself when a memory of her father telling her how happy he was in Gryffindor popped up. "Oh, Gryffindor is it? Fine let's trust your opinion then, GRYFFINDOR" the hat exclaimed once he heard Lily mumble the word 'Gryffindor' in her mind by mistake. Lily shakily walked towards the Gryffindor table, earning the loudest cheers, but all Lily could think of was how she let her elder brother down by not getting into Slytherin.
As soon as Lily got to the table, she was engulfed in a hug by her cousins and eldest brother. She smiled softly and before returning their hug and thanking them and proceeded to greet the other Gryffindors.
"Weasley, Hugo"
Hugo walked up to the stool shakily before sitting down. Lily crossed her fingers beneath the table and not even a second later the hat exclaimed
"GRYFFINDOR"
This made Lily feel better as her best friend would be in the same house as hers. Hugo walked towards the table with a large grin on his face, before he was engulfed in a hug by his cousins. Lily sat next to Poppy across from Hugo. Lily looked at the High Table. At the end and nearest to her was Hagrid, who gave her a thumbs up when he saw her looking at him. Lily grinned back at him. In the centre of the High Table was none other than Professor McGonagall who sneaked a small smile in her direction.
'Zabini, Blaire' was sorted in Slytherin before Professor Longbottom wrapped the parchment up and took the hat and stool away.
Lily looked down at the empty golden plate before her and wondered when she last ate. "Now I would just like to welcome you all to Hogwarts, may the feast begin!" said Professor McGonagall with a smile on her face. Everyone clapped and cheered before eating. Lily's mouth fell open at the dishes full of food in front of her. She had heard various stories from her whole family, but none of them would ever compare to actually sitting there. Roast chicken, mashed potatoes, bacon, steak, boiled potatoes, sausages, were a few of the many dishes available. The children immediately dug in.
Nearly Headless Nick, the resident ghost of Gryffindor tower loomed near the first years, introducing himself to those who didn't know him. Lily remembered all the stories her parents and brothers had told her. Lily's mood dampened when she remembered Albus. She turned in her seat and looked for her brother who was on the other end of the Great Hall. As if he felt her gaze on him, Albus turned to look at his sister before smiling at her. Lily smiled happily when she saw that her brother wasn't mad at her.
When everyone had eaten their fill, the remains of the food faded away, leaving them sparkling clean. A moment later pudding in various flavours, Ice cream in every flavour you could think of, tarts, different pies, doughnuts,... appeared before them. Lily helped herself to two scoops of chocolate ice cream before the talk turned to their families. "We're 3/4 wizard and 1/4 muggle" Octavia Finnigann referred to herself and her brother Benjamin who was busy eating pudding. "Dad's a half-blood and Mum's a pureblood" The others "oohed" at the interesting fact.
Lily started to feel warm and sleepy as she looked at the High Table. Hagrid was speaking to Professor Sprout who was drinking from her goblet. Professor Longbottom and Professor seemed to be having a very interesting conversation. Lily looked at the Professor who was talking to Professor Flitwick. She had never seen her before.
At last, the desserts too disappeared and Professor McGonagall got to her feet again. "Ahem- just a few more words now that we have all been fed. I have a few start-of-term notices to give you. First-years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils. And a few of our older students would do well to remember that as well." McGonagall's eyes flashed in the direction of James Potter and Fred Weasley II who were as good as if not better than the Weasley twins themselves.
"I have also been asked by Ms Filch, the caretaker, to remind you all that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors. Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of term. Anyone interested in playing for their house teams should contact Madam Hooch". This made Lily wonder if she could participate in the trials.
The Gryffindor first-years followed Zoe Wallace who was their Prefect through the chattering crowds, out of the Great Hall and up the marble staircase. Lily dragged her feet in an attempt to keep up, as she was far too full and tired. Zoe led them through doorways hidden behind sliding panels and hanging tapestries twice.
"Ah, here we are" Zoe seemed to exclaim after ages. At the very end of the corridor hung a portrait of a very fat woman in a pink silk dress.
"Password?" she said
"Cauda Draconis," said Zoe which caused the portrait to swing forward and reveal a round hole in the wall. Everyone scrambled in and found themselves in the Gryffindor common room, a cosy, warm, round room full of soft armchairs. Zoe directed the boys through one door to their dormitory and the girls through another. At the top of a spiral staircase, they found their beds at last: five four-posters hung with deep-red velvet curtains. Their trunks had been brought up already. Too tired to talk, they pulled their pyjamas on and slipped into bed.
Perhaps Lily had been thinking too much because she had a very strange dream. She was in a room, darkness surrounding her when she heard a voice telling her to shift to Slytherin as it would lead her to greatness and that her brother would be disappointed in her if she didn't. Lily refused and told the voice that she knew her brother well enough to know that he wouldn't blame her over this. The voice proceeded to call her an ignorant disappointment before and a flash of green light woke her up from her sleep. Lily merely rubbed her eyes tiredly before turning around and falling into a dreamless sleep, forgetting all about the dream she had before.
