Chapter 9

Kazakhstans POV (1st Person)

“It's okay Kazakhstan…. Take your time.” Poland coached gently.

My wings twitched nervously as I looked off the edge of the small cliff and down into the sand pit.

“What if I fall again?” I asked, turning to face the red and white faced country.

“Well you’ve already fallen once before right?” Poland replied, walking towards me. “You already know what it feels like. I know it's scary, trust me, I’ve been through it before.”

“Okay…” I said, still feeling uncertain.

I gulped as I looked over the edge and Poland stepped back. I couldn't do this. I was too scared. I wanted Russia. He always knew how to make me feel better.

I took a few steps back for a running start. My wings stretched away from my sides. I could feel them aching for action.

“3...2...1…” I muttered, my feet pounding across the grass as I leaped off the edge of the cliff.

I pushed my wings further out and flapped them hard, but it wasn't enough.

I shrieked as my wings gave out and I smacked into the sand at the bottom.

“Kazakhstan!” I heard Poland call out as he landed gracefully next to me. “Are you alright?”

I nodded as he placed a gentle hand on my arm and helped me up.

“I think we should stop for today. We’ve worked your wings more than they’ve ever been worked in the past.” Poland said.

I nodded as we climbed out from the sand pit.

“I’ll take you home now.” Poland said, starting away from the cliff.

I paused, looking back at the edge.

“I don't know if I can do this…” I said, looking up at him nervously, my stomach starting to twist in anticipation. “I don't think I’m strong enough to fly.”

“Hey…” Russia said, gently, putting his hands on my shoulder and giving me his strong, reassuring smile. “I know it's new and scary for you, but you're strong Kazi. Super strong. And I believe, one day, you’ll fly. And it will be amazing and you’ll be the best flier in the world…”

“Wait.” I said, feeling shy as he turned to look at me. “Can I try… one more time?”

“Okay. One more time.” Poland smiled softly. “Remember, deep breaths.”

“Deep breaths..” I muttered getting into position, stretching out my wings once again. “I can do this.. Deep breaths…”

I ran forward as fast as I could, feeling the wind tickle my feathers as I picked up speed. And then I closed my eyes lept.

“You’re doing it!” Poland yelled. “Keep it up!”

I opened my eyes and found myself up in the air. My fragile wings pounding and gilding to the beating of my heart.
I felt a rush of air to my left as Poland flew next to me.

“I-I did it!” I yelled, trying to keep myself steady. “I did it!”

“Take my hand!” Poland said holding his hand out as I grabbed it. “We’re going to turn around now. Lift up those edge feathers on the left side."

It was wobbly work but we managed to turn, gliding higher as the current pulled us up higher into the air.

“Can we fly back to my house?” I asked over the wind.
