Chapter 6

My eyes snapped open as I heard a loud cough from the room next door.

Ukraine had been a nightmare. I’d done my best to keep the fever and the coughing down, but nothing I ever did seemed to help.

Another strangled cough pulled me from my thoughts.

“That's it.” I muttered, grabbing my leg and ushanka as I headed into Ukraines room.

I quickly opened the door and walked over to him, shaking him.

  "Uke wake up." I hissed.

"Mmmmm?" He groaned, his eyes fluttering weakly.

"I need you to help me. Come on, I'll carry you." I said, pulling him into my arms as he clung me.

I felt a scream beg in my throat as the extra weight put pressure on the already too tight prosthetic. I bit my lip hard and took a few staggering steps to the door. I made my way down the stairs as quietly as I could.

Each step was agony, my eyes welled up, threatening to overflow.

I finally made it to the door and my hand froze as I heard a snore. My head slowly turned to see my father passed out, several large bottles of vodka laying around him.

  Dead drunk.

I breathed a small sigh of relief as I quietly left out the front door and went out to my car. I laid Uke in the back seat, before getting into the driver's seat and speeding down the road as fast as I could.

I fumbled and pulled my phone from my pocket.

"Call Stars and Stripes." I said into it.

'Calling Stars and Stripes.' The automated voice responded.

I tapped my fingers nervously as I waited for Ame to pick up.

"Dude……." I heard Ame groan from his end of the phone. "It's like ….. super early…. What the hell do you want….?"

"I need to leave Ukraine at your house. He's not doing well and I…. I don't want dad to take it all out on him. Please Ame." I said, begging. "I know, I've been a horrible boyfriend lately. You can be mad at me for that but I…."

I took a deep breath, trying to swallow down my pride.

  "I need your help…" I mumbled quietly.

"Hm? Didn't catch that." Ame replied, in a tone of voice that let me know he definitely heard what I said.

I muttered a few unsavory words in Russian before trying again.

"I. Need. Your. Help." I said clearly into the phone.

"I'll tell mom and Nada. See you in a few." He said, hanging up.

I glanced back at my brother, his eyes squeezed shut as he coughed in pain.

"Hang on buddy…. I'm going to get you somewhere safe…" I said, not sure if I was saying it to me or him.

I pushed on the accelerator a little more, I was getting closer and closer to his house.

I finally swung into the drive, and got out pulling Ukraine from the backseat and into my arms. Canada, America, and France were already waiting for me by the time I got to the front door.

“Come inside, quickly.” France said, inviting us in.

“I'm sorry if I'm bothering you. I just didn't know where else to go.” I said quickly.
