Chapter 19

A thick silence falls between us.
Part of me knows he's right, we can't stay with him. Hes a monster and will tear my family apart but… murder…??

“Dad didn't hesitate with me.” Uke scowled, as if reading my thoughts. “Im not going to hesitate with him.”

I managed to get out of the tub and  leaned against the wall, Uke got out and faced me.

  “Uke listen, you're only 14-”

“And you're only 16! That's barely older than me! Don't try to play the big brother card with me right now. It's not going to work.”

“It's my job to protect you, I am your older brother. Listen, Uke, I promised mom-”

  “WELL MOMS GONE!”

I slowly sucked in a harsh breath, I felt my fists ball up in anger.

“She's gone Russia, whatever you promised her, it doesn't matter now. We have to move on, find our own path. And that starts,” He took a step towards me. “With getting rid of Dad. Now hand me the knife.”

“No.” I said, my voice steely calm, I could feel the weight of the weapon grow heavy in my pocket.

I slowly slipped my hand in and squeezed it tight. Uke saw.

  “Hand it over!” He yelled.

  “I said no!”

Uke lunged at me, knocking me against the bathroom door. I wasn't strong enough to hold my own weight and came crashing down, Ukraine on top of me.

“Get off!” I yelled, trying to push him off as he tried to get his hands into my pants pocket.

“No! I can't live like this! I can't live with him!” He did his best to hold my hands off but he was physically weakened from years of sickness.

  “Ukraine stops!”

I pulled the knife out to try and get him off but the world seemed to move in slow motion.

As I pulled it out and slowly lifted it to go above my head, Ukraine reached out for it, desperation in his eyes. As his hand inched closer, the poorly made knife blade flicked out, slicing into his tender flesh.

He screamed and pulled his hand back, clutching it to his chest.

I watched him wraith around him horror, terrified by what I’d just done. I stumbled off the ground and lept to my feet, I took a step towards him, still half paralyzed by fear.

“D-don't hurt me!” Uke cried out, looking up at me with eyes full of fear.
He looked at me like he looked at Dad.

I threw open the door and took off.

  I ran.

I ran through the room, I ran down the stairs, I ran out the hotel doors and just kept running.

I finally stopped when my leg gave out, I heard a satisfying click! as it snapped from under me and my face met the concrete sidewalk.

There was no effort to get up.

There was no repairing the damage I’d just done.

As I squeezed my eyes shut to stop threatening tears, I could see Ukraines face.

  Pale.

  Shocked.

  Scared.

  Scared of me.
